The Upgrade Brief — Wednesday, October 21, 2026
Wednesday, October 21, 2026
Two of the biggest names in loyalty moved in opposite directions this week: United made status harder to buy with butts-in-seats, while Capital One and Bilt spent aggressively to buy your points balance.
1. United kills the segment path to status — and raises the 1K bar 14%
WHAT HAPPENED — Starting January 1, 2027, Premier Qualifying Flights disappear entirely and Premier Qualifying Points become the only metric for MileagePlus elite status. Premier 1K jumps from 28,000 PQPs to 32,000. Silver, Gold and Platinum hold at 6,000 / 12,000 / 18,000 PQPs, and members still need a minimum of four United or United Express segments. Cardholders get a PQP head start at the top of 2027 equal to 5% of their tier's requirement — 300 Silver, 600 Gold, 900 Platinum, 1,600 for 1K.
WHY IT MATTERS — The cheap-fare mileage runner is officially extinct at United, and 1K is now a $32,000-ish-a-year proposition. Spend is the only currency that counts.
YOUR MOVE — If you were going to earn status on segments, re-run the math now against Delta Medallion or Atmos Rewards before you book 2027 travel. If you're staying with United, open an eligible co-branded card by December 31 to bank the 5% head start — it's the only free PQPs on the table. 2. Capital One puts 300,000 miles and $1,000 on the table — if you can spend $120K
WHAT HAPPENED — Capital One has a limited-time offer on the Venture X Business card: 150,000 miles after $40,000 in the first four months, plus another 150,000 miles and a $1,000 Capital One Business Travel credit at $120,000 in that same four-month window. Annual fee is $395, the travel credit expires 16 months after account opening, and the offer must be started from Capital One's own page. No end date has been published.
WHY IT MATTERS — 300,000 transferable miles is the largest publicly available welcome bonus on a U.S. business card right now, and the first tier alone — 150K for $40,000 — is a strong offer on its own merits.
YOUR MOVE — If you run real volume through a business, this is the week's clearest win; treat $40,000 as the realistic target and the second tier as upside. Can't get near those numbers? The World of Hyatt Business card's 70,000 points after $7,000 in three months ($199 fee) is the better spend-to-value trade, though note that 70K is not Hyatt's all-time high — 75,000 after $7,500 has appeared repeatedly. 3. Bilt adds JetBlue at 1:1 — rent money now buys Mint
WHAT HAPPENED — Bilt confirmed JetBlue TrueBlue as its 27th travel partner on October 20, transferring at 1:1 in 1,000-point increments (2,000 minimum for Blue Status members). You have to link your TrueBlue account before the first transfer. There is no launch bonus.
WHY IT MATTERS — TrueBlue is a revenue-based program, so this is less about outsized award charts and more about a genuinely useful domestic and transatlantic outlet for points most people earn by paying rent. It also puts another 1:1 airline in a program whose transfer list has been thin on U.S. carriers.
YOUR MOVE — Don't speculatively transfer; TrueBlue points are worth roughly what JetBlue is charging in cash that day. Price the cash fare first, then move points only against a confirmed booking. Watch for a launch bonus — new Bilt partners often get one within a few months. 4. Amex dangles 35% to Marriott — and Citi's good bonuses die Saturday
WHAT HAPPENED — American Express launched a 35% bonus on Membership Rewards transfers to Marriott Bonvoy on October 20, running through December 10. That is well above the 20% level Amex has typically offered on this pairing. Meanwhile Citi's 30% bonus to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank and 25% to Avianca LifeMiles both end October 24. Note: I could not confirm the Amex–Marriott terms on an American Express page, since its transfer-bonus offers sit behind cardholder login; the 35% figure and December 10 end date are consistent across multiple independent outlets but treat the exact terms as unconfirmed until you see them in your own account.
WHY IT MATTERS — A big headline percentage on a weak partner is still a weak transfer. At 1.35 Bonvoy points per MR point and roughly 0.7 cents of value per Bonvoy point, you're liquidating Membership Rewards at under a cent apiece — less than half what a good airline transfer returns. The Citi bonuses expiring Saturday are the better pairings and they're the ones on the clock.
YOUR MOVE — Skip the Marriott bonus unless you have a specific, priced-out Marriott redemption that beats a cash rate. Spend the next three days on Citi instead: if you have a JAL or Avianca award in sight, transfer before October 24. Confirm award space first — transfers are one-way and final. Offer ends: October 24, 2026 (Citi) · December 10, 2026 (Amex–Marriott) · Verified: October 21, 2026 · Source: https://www.point.me/insights/current-transfer-bonuses/
5. Alaska sends Hawaiian's A330s to Osaka and Tahiti — intro fares end Monday
WHAT HAPPENED — Alaska and Hawaiian announced Seattle–Osaka Kansai beginning May 14, 2027 (four weekly) and Seattle–Papeete beginning June 11, 2027 (three weekly), both year-round on Hawaiian-branded A330s with lie-flat Business Suites. Tickets are on sale now, and introductory round-trip Main Cabin fares from Seattle start at $999 to Papeete and $1,199 to Osaka through October 26.
WHY IT MATTERS — This is Alaska's third Asia destination and a revival of a Tahiti route that failed once before. More importantly for points: new long-haul premium cabins on a oneworld carrier usually open at their most generous award availability on day one.
YOUR MOVE — If Japan or French Polynesia is on your 2027 list, search award space this week while the schedule is fresh. Atmos Rewards points and oneworld partner currencies both work; British Airways Avios from Capital One carry a 20% bonus through October 31 if you need to top up. Bottom line
Best opportunity: Capital One's Venture X Business offer — 150,000 miles at the $40,000 tier is real, verified on Capital One's own page, and the richest transferable-currency bonus in market. Biggest risk: Burning Membership Rewards into Marriott at 35% because the number looks big. It's the worst-value transfer of the week dressed up as a promotion — and United's 2027 rules are the quieter, costlier change to plan around.
