The Upgrade Brief — Thursday, October 22, 2026

Thursday, October 22, 2026

Every story today runs through a credit card: Southwest just rebuilt elite status around card spend, American's quarter shows how much of the airline the card is now carrying, and the week's two best offers are banks paying up for your statement balance.

1. Southwest guts the cheap Companion Pass and renames the whole status ladder

WHAT HAPPENED — Southwest's 2027 Rapid Rewards rules are now live on its own site. Companion Pass qualifying points are retired December 31, 2026. From January 1, the pass is earned only through Tier Qualifying Points: 95,000 TQPs (or 75 flights) delivers a Milestone Reward of exactly three Companion Pass trips, and only the new 140,000-TQP Platinum tier gets unlimited trips. A-List becomes Silver at 35,000 TQPs, A-List Preferred becomes Gold at 65,000, and all Rapid Rewards cards earn 1 TQP per dollar starting January 1. A premium Chase-issued Southwest card and the first Southwest Icon Lounges arrive later in 2027.

WHY IT MATTERS — The old Companion Pass was the single best value in domestic loyalty precisely because credit card welcome bonuses counted toward it. Replacing "unlimited for a year" with "three trips at 95,000 TQPs" is the biggest devaluation of the year, and the TQP-per-dollar conversion means the pass now costs real spend rather than clever sign-ups.

YOUR MOVE — If you are anywhere near the 2026 Companion Pass threshold, finish it before December 31 and lock a pass that runs through 2027 under the old terms. Do not open a Southwest card in January expecting the bonus to carry you — it won't anymore. One housekeeping note: Southwest's own page contradicts itself on Silver boarding, listing Group 17 in the tier table and Group 1 in the footnote, so don't bank on boarding position until they fix it.

2. American's record quarter is a credit card story with an airline attached

WHAT HAPPENED — American reported Q3 this morning: $16.3 billion in revenue, up 19.3% and above its own guidance, against a $269 million GAAP net loss as fuel expense jumped 67.5% to $4.6 billion at $3.85 a gallon. Inside the release, the loyalty numbers: AAdvantage enrollments up 27.4%, Citi co-branded card spend up nearly 10% year over year, and a loyalty program liability of $11.5 billion across current and noncurrent lines. American has told investors it is targeting roughly $10 billion in annual cash from card and other partners.

WHY IT MATTERS — When an airline posts record revenue and still loses money on fuel, the card portfolio is what closes the gap — and that gives American a structural reason to keep pushing spend onto Citi plastic rather than to compete on award pricing. Expect more generous card offers and more pressure on AAdvantage redemption value, in that order.

YOUR MOVE — Take the subsidy while it's being handed out. The Citi AAdvantage Executive is at a best-ever 125,000 miles after $15,000 in purchases in five months, with a $695 annual fee, Admirals Club membership, and up to $500 a year in AA Vacations credits. Citi has not published an end date, so treat the "ends soon" chatter as unconfirmed — but if the $15,000 is spend you already have, there is no reason to wait.

3. Alaska's Atmos cards jump to 100,000 points — with a companion award that beats a companion fare

WHAT HAPPENED — Bank of America pushed limited-time offers across the Atmos Rewards lineup on October 21. The Atmos Rewards Summit Visa Infinite is at 100,000 bonus points after $6,000 in purchases in 90 days, with a $395 annual fee, 3x on dining and Alaska/Hawaiian purchases, eight Alaska Lounge passes, and a 25,000-point Global Companion Award good for a companion on any cabin, including international. The mid-tier Atmos Rewards Ascent, the rebranded Alaska Visa Signature, is at 80,000 points with a $95 fee and the $99 companion fare, now valid across Alaska and Hawaiian flights in North America.

WHY IT MATTERS — The Summit's companion award is the differentiator: it covers an award ticket in any cabin rather than discounting a domestic coach fare, which makes a $395 card the cheapest way to fly two people in a premium cabin on the merged Alaska-Hawaiian network. No $395 card from a larger airline comes close on that one benefit.

YOUR MOVE — Summit is the pick if you can clear $6,000 in a quarter and will actually use the companion award on a long-haul redemption; Ascent at $95 is the better fit for domestic West Coast flyers. Confirm the Ascent terms on the application page before you apply — reporting is inconsistent on whether it's 80,000 or 85,000 points and whether the spend window is 90 or 120 days.

4. Capital One opens a 30% bonus to Virgin Atlantic — the one that actually matters

WHAT HAPPENED — Capital One launched a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and Virgin Red on October 21, running through November 20. Transfers move at a 1:1 base rate with a 1,000-mile minimum, so 1,000 Capital One miles become 1,300 Virgin points. No cap has been published.

WHY IT MATTERS — Virgin is the rare partner where a transfer bonus changes the actual math rather than just padding a balance: ANA first and business class, Air France-KLM awards, and Delta One space all price out of Flying Club, and a 30% bonus on an already-reasonable chart is a genuine discount on seats you can book today.

YOUR MOVE — Search Virgin's award calendar first, then transfer. Flying Club points are useless if ANA space doesn't open, and Virgin has no reinstatement path worth relying on, so never speculatively transfer more than one specific booking's worth. The offer lives in your Capital One rewards dashboard — we could not confirm the terms on a public Capital One page, so verify the 30% there before moving miles.

5. IHG points at half a cent, with the cap lifted — but check what your account actually sees

WHAT HAPPENED — IHG is running a tiered points-purchase promotion through 11:59 p.m. ET on November 5. Buying 5,000–10,000 points earns an 80% bonus, 11,000–39,000 earns 90%, and 40,000–200,000 earns 100%. The annual purchase ceiling is lifted from 150,000 to 200,000 pre-bonus points, so a maxed-out buy is 400,000 points for about $2,000 — roughly 0.5 cents each. Eligibility is not uniform: some members report seeing only a 30% discount instead of the 100% bonus.

WHY IT MATTERS — Half a cent is the floor price for IHG points, and IHG's dynamic pricing still leaves plenty of properties where a night runs well above that in cash. The lifted cap is the real news — 400,000 points is enough to fund a full premium stay outright rather than top off a shortfall.

YOUR MOVE — Only buy against a specific stay you have already priced in both cash and points; IHG's dynamic chart means there is no universal break-even. Log in and check your own offer before committing — if you're seeing 30% rather than 100%, this is not your deal. We could not load IHG's public purchase page to verify the tiers independently, so confirm them in the portal at checkout.

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: the Atmos Rewards Summit at 100,000 points plus a 25,000-point Global Companion Award — a premium-cabin companion ticket for a $395 fee is the best structural value on the board right now.

Biggest risk: Southwest's Companion Pass. The card-bonus shortcut dies December 31, and the replacement asks 95,000 TQPs for three trips — if you're close this year, close it this year.
