The Upgrade Brief — Tuesday, October 20, 2026

Tuesday, October 20, 2026

The issuers are repricing the premium tier in both directions at once — Chase quietly cut what your points buy, Amex is bolting on benefits to justify the fee, and the best transfer bonuses on the board die this week.

1. Southwest kills A-List, adds a third tier, and makes Companion Pass harder

WHAT HAPPENED — On October 15 Southwest announced a full Rapid Rewards rebuild effective January 1, 2027. A-List becomes Silver (35,000 Tier Qualifying Points or 25 qualifying flights), A-List Preferred becomes Gold (65,000 TQPs or 50 flights), and a new Platinum tier sits on top at 140,000 TQPs or 100 flights. Companion Pass Qualifying Points are retired entirely — the Pass now runs off TQPs, with three Companion trips at a 95,000-TQP milestone and unlimited trips only at Platinum.

WHY IT MATTERS — Southwest just moved the unlimited Companion Pass from roughly 135,000 points to its new top tier, and credit card welcome bonuses no longer count toward it. The cheap, card-driven path to the single best perk in domestic travel is closing.

YOUR MOVE — Earn Companion Pass in 2026 under the current rules if you're anywhere close: Southwest confirms 2026 earners keep unlimited trips through December 31, 2027. That's the last clean run. If you hold a Rapid Rewards card, note that every $1 of card spend earns 1 TQP starting in 2027, with a 10,000-TQP boost at 130,000 TQPs — which makes the card the main qualification engine going forward, not the shortcut it used to be.

2. Chase's Hyatt haircut is now live for every Sapphire Preferred holder

WHAT HAPPENED — As of October 1, 2026, existing Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders transfer Ultimate Rewards to World of Hyatt at 4:3 instead of 1:1 — 40,000 Chase points now buy 30,000 Hyatt points. Anyone who applied on or after June 15, 2026 has been on the worse ratio since day one. Chase has told reporters there are no planned changes to Sapphire Reserve transfers, which remain 1:1. The same refresh added a $100 Chase Travel hotel credit (up from $50), 3x on gas and vacation rentals, and up to $120 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck every four years, while killing the 10% anniversary points bonus.

WHY IT MATTERS — Hyatt is the single best use of Ultimate Rewards, and the $95 Sapphire Preferred was the cheapest ticket to it. A 25% cut to that pipeline is a bigger real-world devaluation than anything Hyatt itself did this year, and it quietly re-tiers the whole Chase lineup around the $795 Reserve.

YOUR MOVE — If Hyatt is the reason you hold a Sapphire card, the Preferred no longer does the job: move Hyatt transfers to a Sapphire Reserve, a Chase Ink card paired with a Reserve, or Bilt, which still transfers to Hyatt 1:1. Do not speculatively dump points into Hyatt to beat a deadline — that deadline has already passed. If you're keeping the Preferred for the $95 fee and the travel credits, that math still works; just stop treating it as a Hyatt card.

3. Amex loads two new Platinum benefits on Thursday

WHAT HAPPENED — Amex flips the switch on two additions October 22. The American Express Cruise & Yacht Collection replaces Cruise Privileges and adds The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Orient Express Sailing Yachts, Aman at Sea, Virgin Voyages, and Explora Journeys, with $100–$300 in onboard credit per room on eligible sailings of five nights or more, an amenity, and 2x Membership Rewards on eligible cruise bookings — for Platinum, Business Platinum, and Centurion. Separately, Business Platinum and Corporate Platinum holders get a complimentary ZO membership from Tishman Speyer: unlimited access to 25-plus clubhouse and studio workspaces in New York, Boston, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, four guest passes a week, and up to $500 a year in event-space credits. No annual fee increase attached to either.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is what the $895 Platinum fee is buying now: experiential and small-business perks rather than lounge access, which Amex has been trimming all year. The ZO benefit in particular is a direct shot at the coworking credits Chase and Capital One have been using to defend their business cards.

YOUR MOVE — Business Platinum holders in those six cities should activate ZO in the app on Thursday — there's no enrollment and the $500 event credit is calendar-year, so a late-2026 activation still gets you a full allotment before it resets. On the cruise side, only book through AmexTravel.com if the onboard credit beats what your travel advisor or the cruise line's own loyalty program would hand you; on a five-night sailing, $100 is thin.

4. Transfer-bonus desk: Citi's Japan Airlines and LifeMiles bonuses die Saturday

WHAT HAPPENED — Citi's 30% launch bonus to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank and its 25% bonus to Avianca LifeMiles both end October 24, 2026. JAL is Citi's newest partner, added in late September, transferring 1:1 from Strata Elite and Strata Premier and 1:0.7 from no-annual-fee ThankYou cards. Two more close a week later: Amex to Air France-KLM Flying Blue at 25% and Capital One to British Airways Avios at 20%, both through October 31.

WHY IT MATTERS — JAL is one of the few programs where a 30% bonus genuinely changes what's bookable, and it's the only US transferable-currency route into JAL's award pricing. Launch bonuses on brand-new partners rarely repeat at this size.

YOUR MOVE — Only transfer against a specific award you've already found space for — JAL miles are stuck once they land, and Citi's no-fee cards transfer at a punishing 0.7 ratio, so this is a Strata Elite/Premier play. If you don't have a booking in hand, let all four expire and keep the flexibility. Flying Blue at 25% is the safer speculative transfer of the group given its monthly Promo Rewards.

5. Chase is paying 75,000 points to move Preferred holders up to the Reserve

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase has been emailing Sapphire Preferred cardholders a targeted offer worth 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points for upgrading to the Sapphire Reserve and spending $4,000. The upgrade has to be completed by December 1, 2026 and the spend by December 15. There's no public application link — the offer arrives by email with the subject line "earn 75,000 points with Chase Sapphire Reserve," and a second wave went out after the first round in early October. Some cardholders report receiving an upgrade email with no points attached, so the bonus has to be confirmed in the message itself.

WHY IT MATTERS — A product change isn't a new account, so it doesn't touch 5/24 and it sidesteps Chase's once-per-lifetime Sapphire bonus rule. For anyone who already burned a Reserve bonus or is sitting well above 5/24, this is effectively free entry to a bonus they can't otherwise get.

YOUR MOVE — Check your inbox and your Chase secure message center before December 1; there's no way to request it. If you're offered it, run the math honestly: the Reserve's $795 fee is $700 more than the Preferred's, so 75,000 points only wins if you'll actually use the travel and dining credits. And if you're under 5/24 and bonus-eligible, don't take it — a fresh Reserve application is worth more.

Offer ends: Upgrade by December 1, 2026; spend by December 15, 2026 · Verified: October 20, 2026 · Source: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/targeted-chase-75000-point-upgrade-offer-chase-sapphire-preferred-to-chase-sapphire-reserve/

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: the targeted 75,000-point Sapphire Reserve upgrade — it's the only way left to get a Sapphire bonus if you're over 5/24 or lifetime-ineligible, and it costs nothing to check.

Biggest risk: still holding a Sapphire Preferred as your Hyatt card. The 4:3 ratio is live now, it applies to every existing cardholder, and every night you book through it costs you 25% more than it did three weeks ago.
