The Upgrade Brief — Monday, October 19, 2026
Monday, October 19, 2026
Today's theme: within 48 hours, the two most different loyalty programs in America both decided status should be bought rather than flown, and Amex's next Platinum cut is already readable in its own test code.
1. Southwest just made the Companion Pass an elite perk
WHAT HAPPENED - Southwest is replacing A-List and A-List Preferred with Silver, Gold and Platinum on January 1, 2027, and retiring Companion Pass qualifying points entirely. Tier Qualifying Points become the only currency, and the Pass itself now comes as three trips at a 95,000-TQP milestone or unlimited trips at Platinum. Southwest also confirmed Icon Lounges opening in late 2027, with access tied to a new premium Chase co-brand card, plus Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad as redemption partners in spring 2027.
The new tiers:
Silver: 35,000 TQPs or 25 qualifying flights. 40% earning bonus, one free checked bag, same-day standby on Basic fares.
Gold: 65,000 TQPs or 50 qualifying flights. 60% earning bonus, two free checked bags, two premium drinks per flight.
Platinum: 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying flights. 120% earning bonus, three free checked bags, unlimited Companion Pass trips.
WHY IT MATTERS - The credit-card shortcut to a Companion Pass is dead. Cards now earn 1 TQP per $1, so the spend-your-way-to-a-Pass playbook that defined Southwest for a decade no longer reaches the finish line. A paid Southwest lounge card is also the clearest sign yet that Southwest is chasing the premium revenue it spent 50 years ignoring.
YOUR MOVE - Earn a Companion Pass under the current rules before December 31, 2026. Southwest confirms a 2026-earned Pass stays unlimited through December 31, 2027, which buys you a full extra year on the old terms. If you are close on 2026 qualifying points, finish it this quarter.

2. Amex's next Platinum cut is already sitting in its own test code
WHAT HAPPENED - Language pulled from American Express's qwww test site reads: "Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will require a minimum two-night stay to be eligible for the $600 Lodging Credit." The claimed effective date is January 1, 2027. The same leak describes three further changes, none of them announced:
The Platinum's hotel credit is renamed the Lodging Credit.
Coverage expands to Airbnb Luxe stays, a collection where nightly rates commonly start near $1,000.
A new $250 annual Airbnb Experiences credit appears, unlockable only after you book an Airbnb Luxe property.
US Credit Card Guide surfaced the language on October 13. Doctor of Credit and the rest of the field followed within a day. Amex has said nothing publicly, and none of it is confirmed.
WHY IT MATTERS - The one-night FHR booking is how a large share of Platinum holders convert each $300 semi-annual slice of that credit into real value twice a year. A two-night minimum turns a credit into a spending requirement: you now commit to a second night at FHR rates to collect it. Hotel Collection already carries a two-night minimum, so this would close the last easy door. And a $250 credit gated behind an Airbnb Luxe booking is a benefit most cardholders will never touch, which is exactly what makes it useful to Amex as a headline number.
YOUR MOVE - Spend your second-half 2026 FHR credit on a one-night stay before December 31, while the current terms unambiguously hold. Do not cancel, downgrade or product-change on the strength of this: Amex's test site has been right before, but test code is not an announcement and unreleased changes do get pulled. Re-run the math on the annual fee in January, once Amex publishes actual terms.
Offer ends: N/A | Verified: October 19, 2026, as a rumor, not confirmed by American Express | Source: US Credit Card Guide, Oct. 13
Verification note: this is the one item in today's brief running unverified, and it runs because the window to use the current credit closes before the rumored change lands. The two-night language and the January 1, 2027 date are quoted consistently across every outlet covering it, all tracing to the same Amex test-site source. There is no Amex statement, no updated terms page and no press release. Treat every number here as provisional.
3. Five days left on Citi's best transfer bonus of the year
WHAT HAPPENED - Citi added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a ThankYou transfer partner at 1:1 on September 20 and launched it with a 30% bonus. That bonus, plus a 25% bonus to Avianca LifeMiles, is scheduled to end October 24. Four more windows close right behind it:
Amex to Aeromexico, 20%, ends October 30
Amex to Flying Blue, 25%, ends October 31
Capital One to the British Airways Club, 20%, ends October 31
HSBC to Flying Blue, 20%, ends October 31
WHY IT MATTERS - JAL is one of the few programs where a distance-based chart still beats dynamic pricing outright, and a 30% bonus on a brand-new 1:1 partner is the cheapest entry point ThankYou points have ever had to Japan and to oneworld partner premium cabins. LifeMiles at 25% remains the standard play for Star Alliance business class without fuel surcharges.
YOUR MOVE - Transfer only against a specific award you have already priced and can hold. Both programs are one-way doors, and JAL in particular requires a Mileage Bank account in good standing before points will land. If you do not have a trip in view, skip it: a 30% bonus on miles you never redeem is a 100% loss.

Verification note: Citi's own promotion terms sit behind a login and thankyou.com blocks automated access, so we could not confirm these ratios on a Citi page. The 30% and 25% figures and the October 24 end date are consistent across every independent tracker we checked. Confirm the live ratio on your own ThankYou transfer screen before moving points.
4. United took the flying out of frequent flyer status
WHAT HAPPENED - United is eliminating Premier Qualifying Flights for the 2027 earning year. PQP becomes the only metric, and Premier 1K rises to 32,000 PQP. Silver, Gold and Platinum hold steady on the PQP-only path, but the combined flights-plus-spend route that most road warriors actually used is gone. A four-flight minimum on United or United Express still applies.
What each tier costs, 2027 versus the two 2026 paths:
Premier Silver: 6,000 PQP in 2027. Was 6,000 PQP, or 5,000 PQP plus 15 flights.
Premier Gold: 12,000 PQP in 2027. Was 12,000 PQP, or 10,000 PQP plus 30 flights.
Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQP in 2027. Was 18,000 PQP, or 15,000 PQP plus 45 flights.
Premier 1K: 32,000 PQP in 2027. Was 28,000 PQP, or 22,000 PQP plus 60 flights.
On the card side, earning rates hold but the United Club card's PQP cap rises to 32,000 from 28,000, tracking the new 1K bar. Primary cardmembers earn 1 PQP per $20 on Explorer (capped at 1,000), 1 per $20 on Quest (capped at 18,000) and 1 per $15 on Club (capped at 32,000). Two more changes: United added dynamic pricing to PlusPoints upgrades, and the 5% PQP boost that was open to all elites is now limited to members holding an eligible United card by December 31, 2026. That boost is worth 300 PQP at Silver, 600 at Gold, 900 at Platinum and 1,600 at 1K.
WHY IT MATTERS - A 1K who flew 60 segments on modest fares went from needing 22,000 PQP to 32,000, a 45% increase dressed up as a 4,000-point bump. United announced this two days before Southwest announced its own move to spend-only qualification, and that is the real story: the two programs at opposite ends of the U.S. market reached the same conclusion in the same week. Buying status outright remains mostly theater, since maxing the Club card's 32,000-PQP cap at 1 PQP per $15 takes about $480,000 of spend.
YOUR MOVE - If you hold or want 1K, open an eligible United card before December 31, 2026. The 5% boost is 1,600 free PQP at the 1K level and the only thing United gave away in this announcement, and after December 31 it is cardholders only. If you were coasting toward Platinum on segment count, price 18,000 PQP against the fares you actually book before committing to a re-qualification run. For a lot of people that math no longer closes.

Verification note: united.com renders Premier qualification details only in-browser, so we could not read these thresholds off United's own page. Two independent trackers publish identical figures for all four tiers, the PQF elimination, the four-flight minimum and the December 31 card deadline. Confirm your own PQP balance in the United app.
5. Hyatt finally killed the PDF
WHAT HAPPENED - As of October 15, World of Hyatt members can transfer points to another member directly on Hyatt's website instead of downloading a form, signing it and emailing it in. The terms did not change:
1,000-point minimum, in 500-point increments
Up to 525,000 points per year
Both accounts open at least 60 days
Six free transfers per year
WHY IT MATTERS - Transfers that used to take days of back-and-forth now clear in minutes, which makes household pooling a live tool rather than a last resort. That matters more than it did a month ago: Chase cut the Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt ratio to 4:3 on October 1 for Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred holders, sparing only the Sapphire Reserve line. Pooling existing Hyatt balances across a household is now often cheaper than topping up from Chase.
YOUR MOVE - Before you transfer another Chase point to Hyatt, add up what your household already holds. If a partner or family member has a stranded balance, consolidate it online first and transfer from Chase only for the shortfall, and only from a Sapphire Reserve if you have one.

Verification note: Hyatt's own transfer-points page blocks automated access, so these terms are corroborated across multiple independent reports rather than read off world.hyatt.com. Confirm the annual cap and free-transfer count on the transfer screen itself.
Bottom line
Best opportunity: Lock a Southwest Companion Pass under the current rules before December 31. It is the last time spend-based qualifying works, and a 2026 Pass stays unlimited through all of 2027.
Biggest risk: A two-night minimum on the Amex Platinum lodging credit. It is still only a rumor, but it would break the one-night FHR booking most Platinum holders rely on to justify the fee, so use your current credit before year-end rather than betting it survives.
