The Upgrade Brief — Thursday, September 17, 2026
Wednesday, September 16, 2026
Today's theme: two hard deadlines land inside the next four days — one that quietly shrinks what your Chase points are worth, and one that quietly shrinks what your no-fee card protects.
1. You have 14 days left to move Chase points to Hyatt at 1:1
WHAT HAPPENED — Chase confirms on its own Ink Business Preferred page that starting October 1, 2026, "if you transfer 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points, you will get 750 World of Hyatt points." The 4:3 ratio hits existing Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred cardholders on that date; anyone who applied for a Sapphire Preferred on or after June 15, 2026 has already been transferring at 4:3 since day one. The same June 15 refresh retires the 10% anniversary bonus for existing Sapphire Preferred holders on October 1 as well.
WHY IT MATTERS — Hyatt is the highest-value hotel transfer in the Ultimate Rewards lineup, and a 25% haircut is the single largest cut to that program's real-world value since the Sapphire lineup was rebuilt. If the Preferred is the only transfer-capable card in your wallet, your Chase balance is about to be worth meaningfully less.
YOUR MOVE — If Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred is your only UR-transfer card and you have a Hyatt stay you can realistically pin down, transfer before October 1 and book it. Do not speculatively dump your entire balance into Hyatt for trips you haven't identified — points in Hyatt are stuck in Hyatt. If you hold a Sapphire Reserve, this is your cue to route Hyatt transfers through that card instead, and to consider whether the Preferred still earns its place in the portfolio. 2. Both no-annual-fee Chase Ink cards are at $1,000 — and the offer is flagged "ending soon"
WHAT HAPPENED — Chase's own application pages for the Ink Business Cash and Ink Business Unlimited both show $1,000 cash back after $8,000 in purchases in the first four months, with a $0 annual fee, and both carry an "OFFER ENDING SOON" banner. Chase has not published an expiration date; multiple outlets reported the deadline as this week.
WHY IT MATTERS — That $1,000 is 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points if you hold a Sapphire or Ink Preferred to pool into — a six-figure points haul on a card that costs nothing to carry, and one of the highest returns per dollar of spend available right now.
YOUR MOVE — If you're under 5/24 and have any legitimate business activity, apply today rather than tomorrow. You can be approved for one Ink Cash and one Ink Unlimited, but Chase's own terms say the bonus may be unavailable if you've held that card or another no-annual-fee Chase business card before — check your history first. Since Chase hasn't published an end date, treat "ending soon" as literal. 3. IHG is discounting award nights 15% — and the booking window shuts Monday
WHAT HAPPENED — IHG One Rewards is running a 15% discount on the points required for Reward Nights, applied at booking so you see the original and discounted price side by side. It covers all-points bookings and the points portion of Points & Cash, with no minimum stay. Every source agrees the booking deadline is September 21, 2026. Nothing else about it is clean: reports put eligibility variously at IHG co-brand cardholders, IHG x Revolut debit cardholders, and Platinum/Diamond elites, and the stay window is reported as both November 2 and November 21. IHG has published no public terms page.
WHY IT MATTERS — IHG points are among the easiest to accumulate and the hardest to spend well, so 15% off the points price is a rare genuine improvement to a weak currency — and unlike a transfer bonus, it costs you nothing to check. IHG has run this promotion before and historically opened it to elites a couple of days after cardholders, which is why eligibility reports are scattered.
YOUR MOVE — Log into your own IHG account today and price a Reward Night you'd actually book; the discounted rate either shows or it doesn't, and that settles your eligibility faster than any blog will. If it shows, book by Monday — IHG award nights are typically cancellable, so a speculative hold costs you nothing but the points sitting idle. Do not combine-plan around the fourth-night-free card benefit; on past runs of this promotion the two did not stack. Because IHG hasn't published terms, screenshot your confirmation. 4. The Freedom Flex loses cell phone protection Sunday — and drops its foreign transaction fee the same day
WHAT HAPPENED — Per Chase's updated Guide to Benefits, the Freedom Flex's cell phone protection ends September 20, 2026; covered losses are honored only through September 19. The benefit paid up to $800 per approved claim against a $50 deductible, capped at $1,000 and two claims per 12 months. On the same date, the card's 3% foreign transaction fee goes away entirely. Chase's live Freedom Flex product page no longer lists cell phone protection among the card's protections, and makes no mention of a foreign transaction fee. (This is separate from the Q4 bonus categories now open for activation.)
WHY IT MATTERS — This is a straight swap of a niche benefit for a broad one. Cell phone protection required paying your phone bill with the card and most people never claimed it; a 3% fee applied to every dollar spent abroad. For anyone who travels internationally, the Flex just went from unusable overseas to a legitimate no-fee travel card.
YOUR MOVE — If you have a damaged or stolen phone claim, file it before Sunday — coverage does not extend past September 19 regardless of when the damage occurred. If cell phone protection is load-bearing for you, move your phone bill to a card that still offers it before the weekend rather than after. And if you've been carrying a separate no-fee card purely for overseas spend, the Flex can likely absorb that job now. 5. Qatar quietly un-breaks the rule that stopped you booking Avios awards for anyone else
WHAT HAPPENED — Qatar Airways Privilege Club has dropped the requirement that a member first credit a paid flight — on Qatar or a partner like British Airways — before being allowed to set up a "My List" or "Family & Friends" list. Those lists are what let you redeem Avios for someone other than yourself. Family & Friends also expands from 6 people to 9, and non-members can be added. The 30-day waiting period before a newly added My List member becomes bookable stays in place.
WHY IT MATTERS — The credit-a-flight rule was effectively a wall for U.S. members who hold Avios through card transfers and have never flown Qatar. It meant a balance big enough for two Qsuite seats could only ever be spent on one. Removing it restores Avios to what it's supposed to be: a pooled family currency across Qatar, British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus.
YOUR MOVE — Build your My List today even if you have no trip in mind. The 30-day clock is the binding constraint now, so a list you set up this afternoon is bookable in mid-October — and Qsuite space tends to appear in bursts you can't plan around. If you need to book for a non-member sooner than that, Family & Friends is the faster path, but it pools your points, so understand that before you use it. BOTTOM LINE
Best opportunity: The $1,000 Ink offers — 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points, no annual fee, and a deadline Chase won't publish. That's today's work.
Biggest risk: Letting October 1 arrive with a Sapphire Preferred balance you meant to move to Hyatt. A 25% cut is permanent, and no future transfer bonus will make you whole.
Also on the radar: Chase launched "Invest Your Points" on September 16, letting Freedom, Ink and Sapphire cardmembers push Ultimate Rewards into J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing accounts — Chase's release doesn't state a rate and independent reporting pegs it at 1 cent per point, which is worse than the travel portal, let alone a transfer partner. The Sapphire Reserve's 10th anniversary brings up to $1,050 in one-time Chase Offers travel credits (JSX, IHG, Miraval/Alila, Sixt, Wander) and lifts the monthly DoorDash restaurant promo from $5 to $15 starting October 1. And Amex is running 30% to Hilton Honors through October 14 — a 1:2.6 ratio that still doesn't rescue Hilton points, so treat it as a top-up for a priced-out stay, not a reason to move a balance.
