The Upgrade Brief — Friday, October 23, 2026

Friday, October 23, 2026

The calendar is doing the work this week — a Companion Pass door closing on December 2, a transfer bonus dying tomorrow, and a Marriott promo that just opened a booking window for next summer.

1. Last call: the credit-card route to a Southwest Companion Pass closes December 2

WHAT HAPPENED — Southwest's Rapid Rewards overhaul, published on the airline's own site last week, retires Companion Pass qualifying points after December 31, 2026 and moves everything to Tier Qualifying Points. From January 1, 2027, Southwest states that new Cardmember welcome bonus points — along with referral, anniversary and certain spend bonus points — "do not earn Tier Qualifying Points" and "will not assist you in earning Companion Pass benefits." But the program FAQ carves out an exception: Cardmembers who apply on or before December 2, 2026 and are approved can have welcome bonus spending count as 2026 qualifying points even if they hit the spend threshold in early 2027, with the resulting pass valid through December 31, 2027.

WHY IT MATTERS — The welcome-bonus shortcut to a Companion Pass is the single most valuable card play in domestic travel, and Southwest just put a date on its funeral. From 2027 the pass is an elite perk: 95,000 TQPs or 75 one-way flights for three companion trips, 140,000 TQPs or 100 flights for unlimited. Card spend earns 1 TQP per dollar — so without bonus points counting, you are looking at six figures of swipe to replace what a signup bonus used to deliver.

YOUR MOVE — If a Companion Pass has ever been on your list, apply before December 2 and pair a personal card with a business card to cover the 2026 threshold. Chase's current public offers are unremarkable — Plus 50,000 points after $1,000 in three months ($99 fee), Premier 55,000 after $1,500 ($149), Priority 60,000 after $2,000 ($229) — so don't wait for a better one. The deadline is worth more than the extra points, and the pass runs through the end of 2027.

2. Marriott opened a 3X window on Homes & Villas — for stays you won't take until next summer

WHAT HAPPENED — Marriott launched a Homes & Villas promotion this morning offering registered Bonvoy members 3X base points per qualifying U.S. dollar. The terms are specific: register by November 20, 2026; book between October 19, 2026 (12:01 a.m. EST) and November 20, 2026 (11:59 p.m. EST); and complete a stay of five or more consecutive nights at the same property between May 25, 2027 and September 11, 2027.

WHY IT MATTERS — Marriott is buying summer 2027 occupancy with points seven months out, which tells you something about how soft it expects next summer's long-stay rental demand to be. For members, Homes & Villas is one of the few places Bonvoy still pays a genuinely high base rate, and 3X on top of it is the best promo this platform has run on long stays.

YOUR MOVE — This only works if you already know you're taking a five-night-plus villa trip next summer. Register now regardless — it costs nothing and the deadline is the same as the booking deadline. Then check that the Homes & Villas rate is competitive with booking the same property direct or on a rival platform, because a points multiplier on an inflated nightly rate is not a deal. Note the exclusions: taxes, booking fees, cleaning fees, security deposits and add-ons don't earn, third-party bookings are ineligible, and members who elect airline miles instead of points are shut out.

Verification note: Marriott's promotion page headline shows a stay window beginning May 24, 2027 while its own terms say May 25, 2027. If you are booking a check-in on that date, confirm with Marriott first. The promo page also does not state the standard Homes & Villas base earning rate, so we aren't publishing a combined multiplier.

3. The transfer desk: Citi's JAL bonus dies tomorrow, Capital One's Virgin window runs to November 20

WHAT HAPPENED — Citi's launch promotion for Japan Airlines Mileage Bank — added as a ThankYou partner on September 20 — carries a 30% bonus that ends October 24. Annual-fee ThankYou cards transfer 1:1; no-fee cards transfer at 0.7:1. Separately, Capital One is running a 30% bonus to Virgin Red through 11:59 p.m. ET on November 20. And Bilt added JetBlue TrueBlue as a 1:1 transfer partner on October 20, its 27th partner.

WHY IT MATTERS — A 30% bonus into JAL is the best rate yet on a brand-new partner, and JAL's own award chart still prices long-haul business competitively in a market where almost everything else has gone dynamic. The Virgin route remains one of the few reliable ways to buy into partner award space cheaply.

YOUR MOVE — Only transfer against a redemption you have already found. If you have a JAL seat on hold, move the points today — tomorrow is the deadline and transfers are one-way. The Virgin bonus gives you four more weeks, so there is no reason to speculate there yet. Treat the Bilt–JetBlue link as a convenience, not an opportunity: TrueBlue is a revenue-based program and a 1:1 ratio with no launch bonus is a parking spot, not a deal.

Verification note: Citi's and Capital One's own transfer-bonus pages would not load for us today. Both bonuses and both dates are consistent across multiple independent trackers, but we could not confirm them on the issuers' own sites — check your account's transfer screen before you commit points.

4. British Airways is making Silver and Gold harder to reach

WHAT HAPPENED — British Airways has published new tier point requirements on its own site, effective April 1, 2027: Silver rises from 7,500 to 8,000 tier points and Gold from 20,000 to 21,000. Bronze holds at 3,500. The change takes effect with the start of the 2027–28 collection year.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the second straight tightening of The British Airways Club, and it lands on the two tiers Americans actually chase — Silver for oneworld Sapphire and lounge access, Gold for first-class check-in and better upgrade treatment. There are also credible reports that BA is cutting bonus tier points on flexible and long-haul fares at the same time, which would compound the increase well beyond the headline numbers.

YOUR MOVE — If you were already close to Silver or Gold, finish the job inside the current collection year that runs through March 31, 2027, under the lower thresholds. If you are starting from zero in 2027, be honest about whether BA status is worth the chase versus an Alaska or American route to oneworld Sapphire.

Verification note: the threshold increases are confirmed on British Airways' own page. We could not verify the reported bonus tier point reductions — including the figures by cabin and fare type — on any BA page, and are not repeating numbers we cannot source.

5. Hilton will let you pay your folio with points at checkout

WHAT HAPPENED — Hilton announced on October 21 that Hilton Honors members can now apply points to eligible hotel charges during Digital Check Out in the Hilton Honors app — reviewing the folio and redeeming against it without stopping at the front desk. It is live at 150 U.S. hotels, expanding to more than 800 by the end of 2026 and more than 6,000 properties across the U.S. and Canada in early 2027. Silver, Gold, Diamond and Diamond Reserve members are eligible.

WHY IT MATTERS — Hilton is first among the major chains to put points redemption inside the checkout flow, and that is a distribution change as much as a loyalty one: points become a payment rail for incidentals, not just a currency for room nights. It also gives Hilton a new outlet for the enormous points balances it has sold into the market.

YOUR MOVE — Use it for convenience, not value. Hilton published no minimum redemption and no cents-per-point rate, and folio redemptions historically price well below what the same points fetch on award nights. Check the rate the app quotes you before you tap, and keep your Honors balance pointed at award stays.

Bottom line

Best opportunity: Get approved for a Southwest card before December 2. It is the last time a welcome bonus will ever buy you a Companion Pass, and the pass runs through the end of 2027 — the mediocre current offers are beside the point.

Biggest risk: Transferring points on a deadline rather than a plan. Citi's JAL bonus expiring tomorrow will tempt speculative transfers, and a one-way move into a program you haven't priced out is how a 30% bonus becomes a 100% loss.
