The Upgrade Brief — Saturday, September 12, 2026
Saturday, September 11, 2026
October 1 is the hinge this week: Chase takes something away from one Sapphire card and hands something to the other on the exact same day — and in Washington, a fight started Friday that could eventually reprice every rewards card in your wallet.
1. Chase's Hyatt Transfers Get 25% Worse on October 1 — And Most People Haven't Moved Their Points
WHAT HAPPENED — On October 1, Ultimate Rewards transfers to World of Hyatt drop from 1:1 to 4:3 for Sapphire Preferred and Ink Business Preferred holders. Chase announced this in June and applied it immediately to anyone approved on or after June 15; everyone already holding those cards has been grandfathered at 1:1 through September 30. Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve Business are untouched and keep 1:1.
WHY IT MATTERS — Hyatt is the last major fixed-chart hotel program where Chase points punch above their weight. At 4:3, 100,000 UR buys 75,000 Hyatt points instead of 100,000. If Sapphire Preferred is your only Chase card, your Hyatt redemption power falls by a quarter in 18 days.
YOUR MOVE — Transfer before September 30 only against bookings you're confident about. Do not speculatively dump a full balance into Hyatt — orphaned hotel points are how people lose money on devaluations. Move what you'll realistically use in the next 12–18 months. And if you've been on the fence about Sapphire Reserve, the product-change math just changed: Reserve is now the only Chase consumer card that protects the Hyatt ratio.
Note: Chase's transfer-partner page wouldn't load for us this morning. Terms are consistent across multiple independent reports of Chase's June announcement.

2. The Swipe-Fee Fight Reopens — And Your Rewards Are the Collateral
WHAT HAPPENED — Speaking at the Republican midterm convention on Friday, President Trump claimed that cutting credit card swipe fees would save the average American family $1,200 a year and backed the Credit Card Competition Act. The bill, from Senators Durbin and Marshall, would require banks holding more than $100 billion in assets to route transactions over at least two unaffiliated networks, with merchants picking which one. Amex and Discover are exempt.
WHY IT MATTERS — Interchange is what funds welcome bonuses, transfer partners and purchase protections. Merchant groups' own estimates put household savings closer to $174 — and the last time Congress capped debit interchange, issuers responded by gutting debit rewards rather than cutting prices. Banks argue the same would happen to credit rewards; merchants dispute that the savings wouldn't reach consumers.
YOUR MOVE — Nothing to do today; this bill has been introduced and stalled repeatedly since 2022, and presidential support isn't passage. But it belongs on your watch list, and it's an argument for banking big welcome bonuses now rather than assuming this environment is permanent. Watch for a Senate Judiciary markup as the real signal.

3. Frontier Grabs Colombia — Three Routes Spirit Used to Fly, Intro Fares Gone Monday
WHAT HAPPENED — Frontier announced Thursday its first-ever South America service: Orlando to Medellín starting December 10 (daily, from $169), Orlando to Bogotá starting December 14 (6x weekly, daily from March 6, from $99), and Orlando to Cartagena starting December 19 (weekly, from $129). All three are routes Spirit flew before its collapse. Introductory fares must be ticketed by September 16 for travel January 14 through April 5, with blackouts March 23–30.
WHY IT MATTERS — This is the clearest picture yet of how Spirit's network is being carved up, and Frontier is moving into the international flying that carried Spirit's best margins. For anyone in Florida, a $99 fare to Bogotá resets what the Andes should cost.
YOUR MOVE — If Colombia is remotely on your list, price these by Monday — introductory fares on new Frontier routes rarely survive past the deadline, and government approval is still pending. Pay cash; there's no award value to chase here. Just budget for Frontier's bag and seat fees before you call $99 a deal.

4. Sapphire Reserve's DoorDash Credit Triples — and Finally Gets Useful
WHAT HAPPENED — Starting October 1, the Sapphire Reserve's $5 monthly restaurant credit becomes a $15 monthly credit that works on restaurant and non-restaurant DoorDash orders — groceries, convenience, retail. The change hits Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve for Business. Complimentary DashPass and the two existing $10 non-restaurant promos stay.
WHY IT MATTERS — That's $180 a year against the Reserve's fee, up from $60, and the flexibility is the real upgrade: the old $5 was restaurant-only and widely left on the table. Paired with story #1, October 1 makes Reserve meaningfully better and Preferred meaningfully worse on the same day.
YOUR MOVE — If you hold the Reserve, set a monthly reminder — these credits don't roll over, and DoorDash's $20 pickup minimum can strand a $15 credit if you're not paying attention. If you're a Preferred holder weighing the upgrade, run the numbers this month rather than next.

5. Hyatt Is Paying Double at Thompson — Right as Chase Points Get Scarcer
WHAT HAPPENED — World of Hyatt is running 2x bonus points on eligible stays at participating Thompson Hotels worldwide through November 10, marking the brand's 25th anniversary. Registration is required and must be done in the World of Hyatt app — Hyatt's own offer listing is explicit about the app requirement. Only base points double; elite bonuses calculate off the base rate.
WHY IT MATTERS — Thompson is Hyatt's most interesting urban portfolio and skews expensive, which is exactly where doubled base earning pays. With Chase's transfer tap tightening in 18 days, earning Hyatt points directly from stays just got relatively more valuable.
YOUR MOVE — Register in the app today whether or not you have a Thompson stay booked; it costs nothing and registration must precede the stay. One outlet reports a 30,000-bonus-point cap that we could not confirm on Hyatt's own listing — read the full terms in the app before you plan a big-spend stay around it.

BOTTOM LINE
Best opportunity: Frontier's $99 Orlando–Bogotá introductory fare, which has to be ticketed by Monday and undercuts anything that's served that market since Spirit went dark.
Biggest risk: sleepwalking past September 30 with a Sapphire Preferred and a five-figure Ultimate Rewards balance earmarked for Hyatt. On October 1 that balance is worth 25% less.
