THE UPGRADE BRIEF - Friday, September 11, 2026
Friday, September 11, 2026
Issuers did the talking yesterday: Chase repriced its Air Canada card, Amex went to a record on Hilton, and Marriott opened two doors at once.
1. Chase doubles the Aeroplan card's fee to $195 — and quietly kills three perks for existing holders
WHAT HAPPENED — Effective September 10, the card is now the Chase Air Canada Aeroplan Card: $195 annual fee (up from $95), automatic Aeroplan 25K status with no spend requirement, 15% savings on eligible Air Canada flight rewards, up to $100 in Air Canada statement credits (two $50 credits, one per half-year), a free checked bag for the cardholder and up to eight companions, and a best-ever welcome offer of up to 115,000 points — 75,000 after $4,000 in three months, plus 40,000 after $20,000 in 12 months. Existing cardholders keep the $95 fee through December 31, 2026. Three current perks end at year-end for them: the monthly 500-points-per-$2,000 bonus, the 10% bonus on Ultimate Rewards transfers to Aeroplan, and 3X on grocery and dining.
WHY IT MATTERS — This is the 2026 playbook in miniature: fee up, coupons in, earn rates out. But unlike most refreshes, the new benefits are automatic rather than spend-gated — 25K status and a 15% award discount land on day one.
YOUR MOVE — If you fly Air Canada even twice a year, the math works: 25K status plus a free checked bag plus $100 in credits clears $195 without trying. If you held this card purely for the 10% transfer bonus and 3X grocery, downgrade or cancel before your 2027 renewal. Applying? Note the stack in story 5 — cardholders get 30% on Chase transfers to Aeroplan, then 15% off the award itself.

2. Hilton's Amex cards hit a record 200,000 points — and free nights are back on the cheap seats
WHAT HAPPENED — On September 10, Amex refreshed welcome offers across the entire Hilton Honors lineup. The Aspire ($550 annual fee) now offers 200,000 points after $6,000 in six months — its highest ever, up from 175,000. The no-annual-fee Hilton Honors card offers 70,000 points plus a Free Night Reward after $2,000 in six months; the Surpass ($150) offers 130,000 points plus a Free Night Reward after $3,000; the Business card ($195) offers 150,000 points plus a Free Night Reward after $8,000. All run through January 13, 2027.
WHY IT MATTERS — Free night certificates on the entry-level and mid-tier cards are the real story: a Hilton Free Night Reward has no cap, so it can be worth more than the entire points bonus on a single Maldives or Conrad night.
YOUR MOVE — If you're Hilton-agnostic, the Surpass is the sharpest play — $150 buys 130,000 points plus an uncapped free night. Aspire only earns its $550 if you'll actually use the resort and airline credits and want Diamond outright. Amex's pop-up and once-per-lifetime rules still apply, so check eligibility before you burn an application slot. Verification note: these terms are consistent across multiple independent trackers and NerdWallet's reporting; Amex's public card pages don't display welcome offers, so confirm your exact offer on the application page.

3. Marriott Bonvoy Business hits 100K points plus a 50K free night — the best version of this card in a while
WHAT HAPPENED — Amex is running an elevated offer on the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card: 100,000 bonus points plus one Free Night Award redeemable at properties costing up to 50,000 points, after $8,000 in purchases within the first six months. The annual fee is $125, and the offer runs through November 4, 2026. Marriott lists the terms on its own card page, including the standard caveat that resort fees still apply on the free night.
WHY IT MATTERS — A 50,000-point Free Night Award is the sweet spot of Marriott's certificate tiers — it reaches genuinely good properties without the 85,000-point premium tier's price tag, and it's a category most Bonvoy cards don't hand out at signup.
YOUR MOVE — Worth it if you can absorb $8,000 in six months on a business card and have a 40,000–50,000-point property in mind; that certificate expires a year after issue, so book the trip before you apply. Skip if you're Hilton-leaning — story 2's Surpass offer costs less and asks for a fifth of the spend.

4. Marriott's fall promo is live — register now, because it doesn't backdate
WHAT HAPPENED — Marriott opened registration September 9 for its global fall promotion: 1,500 bonus points on eligible paid stays of two consecutive nights or longer, plus an extra 3,000 points at participating resorts, for a maximum of 4,500 per stay. Stays must fall between September 22 and November 22, 2026, and registration closes November 13. There's no cap on qualifying stays. Award nights, free night certificates, one-night stays, and most third-party bookings are excluded, as are BVLGARI, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and Marriott Executive Apartments.
WHY IT MATTERS — 1,500 points on a two-night stay is unremarkable. The 3,000-point resort kicker isn't — it roughly triples the promo on exactly the stays where Marriott's earn rates are otherwise weakest.
YOUR MOVE — Register today even if you have no stays booked; it costs nothing and it will not apply retroactively to stays taken before you enroll. Then check whether your fall trips can be restructured into two-night blocks under one reservation — splitting a four-night stay into two bookings does not double the bonus, but consolidating two one-nighters can create one. Verification note: the registration link is Marriott's own; the full terms above come from the promotion's T&Cs as reported by multiple outlets, since Marriott's promo page is login-gated.

5. Four transfer bonuses are closing — and one of them stacks
WHAT HAPPENED — The active board as of this morning: Amex Membership Rewards to British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus Avios at 30% through September 27; Amex to Hilton Honors at 30% through October 14; Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan at 20% through September 30, rising to 30% for Chase Aeroplan cardholders; Capital One to JAL Mileage Bank at 30% through September 30; and Citi ThankYou to Leading Hotels of the World at 25% through September 19.
WHY IT MATTERS — The Chase-to-Aeroplan stack is the standout: 30% on the transfer, then 15% off the award itself with the refreshed card from story 1, compounding on a program with no fuel surcharges on its own metal.
YOUR MOVE — Transfer only against a specific booking you've already priced and found space for. Aim the Avios 30% at short-haul Iberia and Aer Lingus intra-Europe awards and BA's off-peak Reward Flight Saver seats. The JAL 30% is the sleeper — JAL business class to Tokyo is still one of the best redemptions going when space opens. Skip the LHW bonus unless you have a confirmed Leaders Club booking; those points are hard to unwind. Verification note: transfer-bonus terms sit behind issuer logins and aren't on Amex's or Chase's public pages. These figures are consistent across two independent trackers but confirm the ratio in your own portal before transferring — transfers are irreversible.
Offer ends: Sept. 19 (Citi/LHW), Sept. 27 (Amex/Avios), Sept. 30 (Chase/Aeroplan, Capital One/JAL), Oct. 14 (Amex/Hilton) · Verified: Sept. 11, 2026 · Source: AwardWallet · Frequent Miler
BOTTOM LINE
Best opportunity: The Hilton Surpass — $150 for 130,000 points plus an uncapped Free Night Reward is the highest value-per-dollar-of-fee on the board, and it runs to January 13, so you can time it around your other applications.
Biggest risk: Existing Chase Aeroplan cardholders sleepwalking into January. The fee doubles and three perks vanish on the same date, and Chase is not going to remind you twice.
