Today is about the fine print: Southwest just quietly ended the easiest Companion Pass in the business, Amex rewrote how your points pool, and Chase is spending real money to buy market share at IHG and United.

1. Southwest kills the credit-card Companion Pass as you know it — you have until December 31

WHAT HAPPENED — Southwest announced a full Rapid Rewards overhaul on October 15. A-List becomes Silver (35,000 TQPs or 25 flights), A-List Preferred becomes Gold (65,000 TQPs or 50 flights), and a new top tier, Platinum, lands at 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying flights. The headline for points people: Companion Pass qualifying points are retired December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, Tier Qualifying Points are the only currency that earns a Companion Pass — three trips at the 95,000-TQP milestone, unlimited trips only at Platinum. Rapid Rewards card spend starts earning 1 TQP per $1 with no cap, plus a one-time 10,000-TQP boost after hitting 130,000 TQPs by 12/31/27.

WHY IT MATTERS — The Companion Pass has been the single best credit-card arbitrage in domestic travel because card sign-up points counted toward it. Replacing that with a 140,000-TQP ladder turns a two-application trick into a six-figure spending commitment, and it hands Chase a reason to launch the premium Southwest card and Icon Lounge network coming in 2027.

YOUR MOVE — If a Companion Pass is anywhere in your plans, earn it in 2026. Southwest confirms you can qualify under existing rules through December 31, 2026, and a pass earned this year carries unlimited trips through December 31, 2027 — a full bonus year on the old terms. That means card applications and spend now, not in January. (Note: Southwest's current Companion Pass threshold page would not load for us today, so confirm your exact 2026 point target in your account before you build a plan around it.)

2. Amex stops pooling your points automatically — and the penalty for missing it is your entire balance

WHAT HAPPENED — American Express updated its Membership Rewards Program Terms (dated October 2026) with an amendment that reads: "When you open a new Product, a new Rewards Account will be created and linked to that Product." The prior language said Amex may automatically link new cards to your existing account. Open a card today and its points land in their own silo until you link them yourself via Manage Connections in the Amex app or online. The amendment is stated as effective immediately.

WHY IT MATTERS — The forfeiture rule did not change, and that is the problem. Amex's terms still say that if you cancel or unenroll your last linked Product in a Rewards Account, you "will immediately lose all of the points" in it. A siloed balance you forgot about is a balance you can zero out by closing one card.

YOUR MOVE — Open the Amex app, go to Manage Connections, and confirm every Membership Rewards card you hold is linked to one account. Do this before you cancel or downgrade anything this fee season. Linking can take a few hours to display, so do not cancel the same day you link.

3. Chase rebuilt the entire IHG card lineup — and the launch offers die November 18

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase and IHG introduced the IHG One Rewards Premier Select Card on October 1: $350 annual fee, 200,000 points after $5,000 in three months, automatic Platinum Elite, 20 elite night credits a year plus two per $5,000 spent, an anniversary free night capped at 60,000 points, up to $300 in annual Food & Beverage Rewards and a $200 airline credit. Both existing cards were refreshed too — Premier ($150) now carries a 180,000-point offer after $3,000, a $100 F&B credit, a $100 airline credit, 15 elite night credits and a 50,000-point free-night cap; the no-fee card gets 125,000 points after $2,000 and five elite night credits. IHG says launch offers run through November 18, and that annual fees will be adjusted in 2027.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the clearest sign yet that hotel co-brands are following the airline cards into the $350-plus coupon-book tier, and the raised free-night caps plus top-ups make IHG's anniversary night genuinely competitive again instead of a 40,000-point consolation prize.

YOUR MOVE — If you stay at IHG even a few nights a year, the 180,000-point Premier offer at $150 is the better math than the Premier Select unless you will actually use the $300 F&B and $200 airline credits. Apply before November 18. Do not assume your current fee is safe — IHG has confirmed 2027 fee changes without publishing the new amounts, so treat this year as the cheap one.

4. United goes on offense: up to 100,000 miles on the personal cards, plus a status raid on Delta and American

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase's United lineup is sitting at its strongest offers of the year, confirmed on Chase's own product pages today: United Club Infinite, 90,000 miles after $5,000 plus 10,000 for adding an authorized user ($695 fee); United Quest, 80,000 miles after $4,000 plus 10,000 for an authorized user and 500 PQP after first purchase ($350); Explorer, 70,000 after $3,000 (up to 80,000 with an authorized user, $0 first year then $150); Gateway, 40,000 after $1,000 (up to 50,000, no fee). Separately, United is running a "Switch to Better Wi-Fi" status match aimed squarely at Delta Medallions and AAdvantage elites, matching up to Premier 1K with a 90-day spend challenge ($1,500 for Silver, $3,000 Gold, $4,500 Platinum, $7,000 for 1K) that extends status through January 31, 2028.

WHY IT MATTERS — United is converting a Wi-Fi marketing fight into loyalty share, and Chase is funding it. Paired, a card bonus plus a matched 1K is the cheapest route to top-tier United status that has existed in years.

YOUR MOVE — Take the card offers now; Chase labels them limited-time with no published end date, which historically means they vanish without warning. On the status match, go straight to the official page before you count on it: sources disagree on whether the deadline is October 15 or extended to October 22, and we could not confirm a live date on United's own promo page. Apply at promo.united.com/offers/statusmatchbetterwifi and treat anything you read elsewhere as unverified.

5. The transfer board clears out: JAL's 30% ends October 24, three more end October 31

WHAT HAPPENED — Citi's newest partner is also its best current deal: ThankYou points transfer to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank at 1:1 with a 30% bonus through October 24, alongside 25% to Avianca LifeMiles on the same deadline. Running through October 31: Amex to Air France-KLM Flying Blue at 25%, Capital One to the British Airways Club at 20%, and Citi to Qatar Privilege Club at up to 35%. Amex to Aeromexico sits at 20% through October 30. Two big ones just died — Amex to Hilton Honors (30%) on October 14 and Chase to Marriott Bonvoy (70%) on October 15.

WHY IT MATTERS — JAL at 1:1 plus 30% is the standout: it prices first-class awards to Japan at a level Citi points have never reached, and a brand-new partner's sweet spots are usually the first thing a program tightens.

YOUR MOVE — Only transfer against a specific award you have already found available. For JAL, confirm the seat before you move a single point — JAL releases long-haul award space in waves and a stranded 1:1 balance has no good backup use. Sit tight on Marriott and Hilton; those bonuses run on a predictable cycle and will return. Caveat on verification: issuer transfer-bonus terms sit behind account logins, so these percentages and dates are cross-confirmed across independent trackers rather than read off the issuer's page. Confirm the bonus is showing in your own account before you transfer.

Offer ends: October 24, 2026 (Citi/JAL, Citi/Avianca); October 30 (Amex/Aeromexico); October 31 (Amex/Flying Blue, Capital One/BA, Citi/Qatar) · Verified: October 16, 2026 · Source: https://frequentmiler.com/current-point-transfer-bonuses/

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: Earning a Southwest Companion Pass under 2026 rules — it is the last year card points buy you one, and it pays out through all of 2027.

Biggest risk: Amex's new unpooled accounts. Cancel the wrong card before you link your balances and you do not get a devaluation, you get a zero.
