The Upgrade Brief — September 10, 2026
Five things worth knowing today.

Hotel loyalty picked a side yesterday: Hyatt walked out on American and straight into Delta's arms — and while everyone watched the breakup, two devaluations quietly started their clocks.

1. Hyatt Dumps American for Delta — What It Means for Your Points

WHAT HAPPENED — On September 9, Delta and Hyatt announced a long-term strategic loyalty partnership built around "Dual Earn": Delta Medallions will earn World of Hyatt points on qualifying stays, and World of Hyatt elites will earn SkyMiles on select Delta fares. Hours earlier, American and Hyatt confirmed they had "mutually decided to not continue" their enhanced relationship. Delta says the tie-up launches "in the coming months"; neither company has published earning rates, eligible fare classes, or elite thresholds yet.

WHY IT MATTERS — Delta just acquired the hotel half of the ecosystem American spent three years building, and AAdvantage loses the one non-airline lever that converted hotel loyalty into Loyalty Points and status.

YOUR MOVE — If your AA and Hyatt accounts are linked, harvest what's left rather than waiting: per the September 9 releases from both programs as reported, account linking closes November 15, 2026; the AAdvantage options inside World of Hyatt Milestone Rewards end December 31, 2026; and the Hyatt options inside AAdvantage Loyalty Point Rewards end February 28, 2027. Do not move hotel spend to Hyatt on the strength of the Delta news — there is nothing to model yet.

2. Five Days Left Before Wyndham's Best Hotels Cost 45,000 Points

WHAT HAPPENED — Wyndham Rewards moves to a four-tier award chart on September 15: 5,000, 15,000, 30,000 and 45,000 points per bedroom per night. Wyndham's own tier-update page frames it as free nights "now start at 5,000 points (instead of 7,500)," with the most elevated hotels moving to the new 45,000-point top tier and the "vast majority" of properties landing in the three lowest tiers. Points-plus-cash rates will run 500 to 4,500 points.

WHY IT MATTERS — The new ceiling is 50% above the old flat 30,000-point cap, and the flat cheap top end was the entire Wyndham value proposition — Vacasa rentals, Registry Collection, all-inclusives.

YOUR MOVE — Book by September 14 for any 2026–2027 stay you can plausibly see yourself taking. Check the individual property's cancellation terms before you speculate, but for anything in the current 30,000-point band, locking it now is a free option on a 50% increase.

3. Amex's 30% Avios Bonus Is the Best Thing on the Transfer Board — and It's Gone September 27

WHAT HAPPENED — Amex is running a 30% bonus on Membership Rewards transfers to British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus Avios through September 27. Three other bonuses are live alongside it: Chase to Air Canada Aeroplan at 20% (ends September 30), Capital One to JAL Mileage Bank at 30% (ends September 30), and Amex to Hilton Honors at 30% (ends October 14).

WHY IT MATTERS — A 30% bonus takes Avios to roughly 1:1.3, which is where short-haul BA and Iberia awards and Qatar Qsuite redemptions stop being a stretch. The Chase deal is the sleeper: it stacks with the Chase Aeroplan card's 10% cardholder bonus on transfers of 50,000 points or more, capped at 25,000 bonus points a year.

YOUR MOVE — Transfer against confirmed award space, not on spec — with one exception: Avios is worth a speculative move if you regularly fly transatlantic on BA, Iberia or AA metal. Skip Amex to Hilton unless you have a specific redemption penciled out; at 1:2.6 the math rarely beats keeping Membership Rewards flexible. One caveat: Amex's transfer bonus page sits behind a cardholder login, so confirm the bonus is showing in your own account before you pull the trigger.

4. Navy Federal Nearly Doubles the Flagship Annual Fee — Existing Cardholders Included

WHAT HAPPENED — Navy Federal is emailing Flagship Rewards cardholders a change-in-terms notice setting a $95 annual fee effective November 2, 2026, up from $49. As of this morning, Navy Federal's public product pages still list the $49 fee and make no mention of the increase.

WHY IT MATTERS — Flagship was the quiet best-value travel card in the military space — 3x travel, 2x everything else, no foreign transaction fees, an Amazon Prime reimbursement and up to $120 in Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, all for $49. At $95 it has to compete on benefits rather than price, and the benefits haven't been announced.

YOUR MOVE — Read the notice when it lands. You can reject the change by calling 1-888-842-6328 before November 1, 2026, but rejection closes the account — a meaningful hit if this is your oldest line of credit. Wait for the benefit disclosure before you torch a long-held account over $46; if the widely rumored refresh adds real value, $95 may still pencil out.

5. Capital One Bolts a $300 Hotel Credit onto the Venture's 75,000-Mile Bonus

WHAT HAPPENED — As of September 8, the $95 Venture Rewards card carries 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in purchases in the first three months, plus a $300 credit for hotels and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel in the first cardholder year. Capital One labels it a limited-time offer and publishes no end date.

WHY IT MATTERS — That's north of $1,000 in first-year value on a mid-tier annual fee, and it's the cheapest entry point into Capital One's transfer partners for anyone unwilling to write a $395 check for Venture X.

YOUR MOVE — Apply through the landing page carrying the credit; this offer is page-specific and does not appear on every Capital One entry point. You're ineligible if you've received a new-cardmember bonus on Venture or Venture X in the past 48 months. Discount the $300 to whatever you'd actually spend inside Capital One Travel — it has no cash value outside the portal.

Bottom line

Best opportunity: Amex's 30% Avios bonus through September 27 — the only bonus on the board that consistently beats the value of keeping your points flexible.

Biggest risk: Wyndham's September 15 chart, with five days to lock top-tier properties at 30,000 points before they become 45,000 — and Flying Blue's September 8 split into Light, Standard and Flex fares is the reminder that "no price increase" and "no devaluation" are very different claims.
