Monday's air traffic control collapse is still rippling through the Northeast, and behind it a wall of end-of-month deadlines is about to land all at once.
1. One severed cable took out the Northeast — and most people won't file the claim they're owed
WHAT HAPPENED — An NJ Transit contractor cut a Verizon fiber line in New Jersey on Monday, September 21, severing communications between the New York and Philadelphia air traffic control centers. The outage ran roughly 9:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET and triggered ground stops at Boston, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Philadelphia. American logged 1,301 delays and 116 cancellations; United 777 delays and 361 cancellations; Delta 922 delays and 47 cancellations. The severed line was the backup — the primary circuit had already failed.
WHY IT MATTERS — Forget the blame game. The money here is in your card's trip delay benefit, which almost nobody claims. Chase Sapphire Reserve pays out after a 6-hour delay, Sapphire Preferred after 12, up to $500 per person per trip for lodging, meals and incidentals — and equipment failure is an explicitly covered reason. You just need to have paid for part of the ticket with the card, points bookings included.
YOUR MOVE — If you were stuck Monday, pull your receipts now: original and revised itinerary, the card statement showing the fare, and a delay statement from the carrier. 2. Two transfer bonuses die next Wednesday, and one of them is the better JAL deal
WHAT HAPPENED — Chase Ultimate Rewards to Air Canada Aeroplan carries a 20% bonus through September 30. Capital One's 30% bonus to JAL Mileage Bank ends the same day. Both are quieter than the headline promos and both expire before the calendar turns.
WHY IT MATTERS — Capital One transfers to JAL at 1:1, so the 30% bonus gets you 1,300 miles per 1,000 — the same effective rate Citi's new JAL partnership is offering, but on a deadline four weeks earlier. If you hold both currencies and want JAL miles, spend the Capital One balance first. On the Aeroplan side, 20% is below that program's typical 25–30% promo, so it only earns its keep against a specific booking.
YOUR MOVE — Price the award first, then transfer — both are one-way and irreversible. If you're weighing Capital One versus Citi for JAL, use Capital One now and keep the Citi option in reserve until October 24. Skip the Aeroplan bonus unless you've already found the seat. 3. Hotel points are selling at half a cent — Hilton's window shuts Friday
WHAT HAPPENED — Hilton Honors is selling points with a 100% bonus on purchases of 5,000 or more, which works out to 0.5 cents per point, and has lifted the annual purchase ceiling from 160,000 to 300,000 for the promotion. It ends September 25. IHG One Rewards is running the same structure — 100% bonus, 0.5 cents per point, cap raised from 200,000 to 300,000 — through 11:59 p.m. ET on October 5.
WHY IT MATTERS — Half a cent is the floor for both currencies, and it's the rare case where buying points beats paying cash outright. A Hilton property pricing at 80,000 points a night costs $400 in purchased points; if the cash rate is north of that, the math works on its own. IHG's longer runway means there's no reason to rush that one.
YOUR MOVE — Only buy against a specific reservation you've already priced both ways. These purchases are nonrefundable and earn no elite credit, so speculative buying is how people end up sitting on a dead balance. Hilton's offer may be targeted with varying bonus amounts — check your own account before assuming 100%. Separately, register for Marriott's fall promo (1,500 points on paid stays of two-plus nights, 3,000 more at resorts, stays through November 22); registration is open until November 13 and costs nothing. 4. Air Canada is killing its longest route, and award holders need a new plan
WHAT HAPPENED — Air Canada is ending Vancouver–Singapore, its longest flight, with the final Changi departure on January 26, 2027 — less than three years after the 787-9 route launched in April 2024. The airline is already cancelling bookings beyond that date, offering rebooking or refunds. Air Canada has not issued a public explanation.
WHY IT MATTERS — This was a useful Aeroplan redemption for anyone on the West Coast heading to Southeast Asia, and it's the second straight signal that ultra-long-haul routes built on connecting traffic aren't surviving 2026 fuel costs. The one-stop alternatives via Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul are more competitive than the nonstop ever was.
YOUR MOVE — If you hold an Aeroplan or codeshare award on this route past January 26, act before the cancellation reaches you rather than after — you'll have better availability to work with. Aeroplan's own flights out of Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Manila connecting to Singapore Airlines remain the sensible rebooking, and Aeroplan should waive the change given it's an airline-initiated cancellation. 5. Bilt's authorized user gets their own transfer cap — and that's the whole trick
WHAT HAPPENED — Bilt authorized users aged 18 and up receive their own card number and can direct rewards to their own account rather than the primary cardholder's. That means a second, separate Rent Day transfer bonus cap of 100,000 points, and a second set of five Points Accelerators. Authorized user cards carry no added fee on the $495 Palladium or the $95 Obsidian.
WHY IT MATTERS — The Rent Day transfer cap is the binding constraint for anyone moving serious volume through Bilt. A household that adds a spouse as an authorized user doubles its monthly capacity without paying a second annual fee — and can go further by having each partner hold the other's card as an authorized user, so both sit on a primary account and an AU account.
YOUR MOVE — If you're regularly hitting the 100,000-point ceiling on Rent Day, add your spouse or adult household member now so the second account is live before next month's transfer window.
