Thursday, September 24, 2026

Citi quietly added the best new airline transfer partner of the year, Chase refreshed a no-fee card into something worth carrying abroad, and Bilt bolted a train onto its transfer chart — while the hotel programs sat out the week entirely.

1. Citi just added Japan Airlines at 1:1 — with a 30% bonus to introduce it

WHAT HAPPENED — Citi added JAL Mileage Bank as a ThankYou Rewards transfer partner on September 20 at a full 1:1 ratio, paired with a 30% introductory bonus running through October 24. Transfers are available to Strata Elite, Strata Premier, the legacy Citi Prestige and AT&T Access More.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the most consequential addition to any transferable-points chart this year. JAL publishes a real award chart, prices partner awards well, and sits in oneworld — and with the bonus, business class to Asia lands around 42,300 ThankYou points, while business class to Europe on American metal comes in near 32,300. That second number is one of the cheapest transatlantic business class redemptions available from a US bank point right now.

YOUR MOVE — Price the JAL award first, then transfer. JAL miles expire 36 months after they post with no extension and no reset, so this is not a currency to stockpile — but for a booking you can actually name, 32,300 points to Europe in a flat bed is the best use of a Citi point on the board. Offer ends: October 24, 2026

2. Chase made the Freedom Flex a travel card — and took the cell phone coverage away

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase refreshed the Freedom Flex on September 21. Per Chase's own release: $250 cash back after $500 in spend in the first three months, no foreign transaction fees, and Points Boost on select Chase Travel hotel bookings worth up to 10% more. The annual fee stays at zero, earning is unchanged at 5% rotating (up to $1,500 per quarter), 5% Chase Travel, 3% dining and drugstores, and the app now previews next quarter's categories. Chase also confirmed Q1 2027 categories: streaming and grocery stores, excluding Walmart and Target.

WHY IT MATTERS — A no-annual-fee card that no longer charges 3% abroad is a different product. The Flex was previously a domestic-only workhorse; it is now a reasonable card to hand a family member heading overseas, and $250 for $500 of spend is the strongest welcome offer this card has carried.

YOUR MOVE — If you're under 5/24 and want a cheap Ultimate Rewards feeder, this is the best entry point Chase has offered on a free card. But check your coverage before you travel: multiple outlets tracking the guide to benefits report the refresh dropped cell phone protection, and if that was your reason for paying your phone bill on this card, move it. Offer ends: Not stated

Verified: September 24, 2026 · Source: https://media.chase.com/news/chase-freedom-flex-more-travel-value Verification note: Chase's release does not mention the removal of cell phone protection; that change is reported by outlets comparing the old and new benefits guides.

3. American's Starlux codeshare goes live Monday — the miles part does not

WHAT HAPPENED — Starlux announced a codeshare with American Airlines on September 23. Tickets went on sale the same day and the codeshare flights begin September 30, connecting Taipei to 20 North American destinations including New York, Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Denver and Las Vegas. On loyalty, Starlux's own announcement says only "Reciprocal Loyalty Benefits (Coming Soon)."

WHY IT MATTERS — Starlux flies one of the best business class products in Asia and has no US loyalty partner, so a oneworld-adjacent tie-up is the first credible path to booking it with AAdvantage miles. A codeshare is also the standard first step toward full partnership and, eventually, oneworld membership.

YOUR MOVE — Nothing to book yet — and be precise about that, because a codeshare flight number is not an award partnership. If you want Starlux business class in the near term, keep buying it with cash or Starlux's own program. Watch for AAdvantage earning and redemption terms; that's the announcement that actually matters. Offer ends: N/A

4. Bilt points now transfer to Amtrak — at the worst ratio on its chart

WHAT HAPPENED — Bilt added Amtrak Guest Rewards on September 23. Per Bilt's newsroom: 2 Bilt Points to 1 Amtrak point, minimum 1,000 points in 1,000-point increments (2,000 for Blue Status), and Amtrak redemptions start at 400 points, or 100 points with Points & Cash.

WHY IT MATTERS — It's the first housing-payments-to-rail loyalty tie-up, and Amtrak points work on upgrades, sleeper cars and lounge access, not just coach seats. But 2:1 is the only sub-1:1 ratio in Bilt's transfer lineup — every airline and hotel partner Bilt has is 1:1. You are taking a 50% haircut for the privilege.

YOUR MOVE — Skip it as a default and use it as a rounding tool. The genuine case is a small orphaned balance: 800 Bilt Points clears Amtrak's 400-point redemption floor, which is a better outcome than a stranded balance doing nothing. For anything larger, Bilt's 1:1 partners — Alaska, Hyatt, Virgin — remain the reason to hold the currency. Offer ends: N/A

5. Last call: Chase-to-Hyatt 1:1 dies Tuesday night

WHAT HAPPENED — Six days left on the grandfathered ratio. Chase's Sapphire Preferred page states it directly: "Your Ultimate Rewards points will transfer to World of Hyatt at a rate of 4:3," and "If you opened your card account prior to June 15, 2026, your points will transfer to World of Hyatt at a rate of 1:1 through September 30, 2026." Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve for Business keep 1:1 permanently.

WHY IT MATTERS — Hyatt is the last major hotel program with a published award chart, which made 1:1 the clearest use of a Chase point. After Tuesday, a 15,000-point Category 4 night costs 20,000 Ultimate Rewards from a Preferred or Ink Preferred.

YOUR MOVE — Hold a Sapphire Reserve? Move your Ultimate Rewards into that account and transfer from there; the Reserve's 1:1 survives. Preferred-only with a named Hyatt stay in the next year? Transfer for that stay before Tuesday. No specific booking? Let it go — stranding points in a hotel program to dodge a devaluation is not a win, and Hyatt points carry a 24-month activity clock. Offer ends: September 30, 2026

Bottom line

Best opportunity: Citi to JAL at 1:1 plus 30% — roughly 32,300 ThankYou points for transatlantic business class is the single best redemption to open up this month.

Biggest risk: treating a codeshare or a 2:1 ratio as a reason to move points. Starlux awards don't exist yet and Amtrak costs you half your balance; the only transfers worth making this week are ones with a confirmed booking behind them.
