The Upgrade Brief — Sunday, September 20, 2026

Sunday, September 20, 2026

The calendar is doing the editing this week: two hard deadlines land inside seven days, the best Chase-to-Marriott rate on record is live for another month, Delta's card bonuses are at all-time highs — and Wyndham's devaluation already happened.

1. Chase is paying 70% on Marriott transfers — matching its best rate ever

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase turned on a 70% bonus for Ultimate Rewards transfers to Marriott Bonvoy on September 15. The offer runs through October 15, 2026 at 11:59pm ET and moves the ratio from 1:1 to 1:1.7 — 60,000 UR becomes 102,000 Bonvoy points. It matches the 70% Chase ran in late 2025; nothing above that has ever been offered on this pairing.

WHY IT MATTERS — Marriott points run around three-quarters of a cent, so a 70% bonus drags the effective value of a Chase point to roughly 1.2–1.3 cents. That is respectable, not spectacular — Hyatt and Aeroplan still beat it on a good day. What it is genuinely good for is closing a gap.

YOUR MOVE — Do not speculatively transfer. Price the award, confirm the room is bookable, then move exactly the number of points you need and book the same session. If you are 40,000 Bonvoy short of a dynamically-priced suite or a long Ritz-Carlton stay, this is the cheapest way you'll ever close it. If you have no booking in mind, sit tight — Chase has run 60–70% to Marriott repeatedly, and it will come back.

2. Wells Fargo kills rewards gifting in five days

WHAT HAPPENED — Wells Fargo is ending the ability to gift rewards to another Wells Fargo customer on September 25, 2026. Automatic redemptions die the same day. Separately, rewards accounts across your own cards no longer combine automatically — that change is already in effect, though you can still consolidate your own balances manually. The travel portal also changed providers on June 30 and dropped cruise bookings.

WHY IT MATTERS — Wells Fargo spent two years building a real transferable-points ecosystem around Autograph Journey and Attune, and two-player households were a big part of the pitch. Removing gifting quietly breaks that: partners can no longer pool toward a single transfer.

YOUR MOVE — If you and a spouse or partner both hold Wells Fargo cards and there is any chance you'll want the balances in one account, gift them before September 25. This is not a deadline you can negotiate after the fact. If you only hold cards in your own name, you're unaffected — manual consolidation across your own cards survives.

Offer ends: September 25, 2026 · Verified: September 20, 2026 (Wells Fargo communicated this by cardholder notice; we could not locate a public wellsfargo.com page stating the date, so treat the date as issuer-notice-sourced) · Source: Doctor of Credit

3. One week left on Amex's 30% bonus to Avios

WHAT HAPPENED — American Express is running a 30% transfer bonus to British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus and Aer Lingus AerClub through September 27, 2026 — 1,000 Membership Rewards points become 1,300 Avios. A separate 30% bonus to Hilton Honors (1,000 MR → 2,600 Hilton points) runs through October 14.

WHY IT MATTERS — Avios is one of the few currencies where a transfer bonus translates into obviously cheaper seats rather than a better spreadsheet: short-haul Reward Flight Saver, Iberia's off-peak transatlantic pricing, and Avios redemptions on American and Alaska metal all price in ways a 30% discount meaningfully moves.

YOUR MOVE — Search availability first, then transfer. Avios pool across BA, Iberia and Aer Lingus, so you can send points to whichever account and shift them to the one holding the seat. Steer toward Iberia or partner-operated flights to dodge British Airways' cash surcharges, which can eat the entire bonus on a transatlantic BA ticket.

4. Delta's Amex cards are at their highest-ever welcome offers

WHAT HAPPENED — Delta and American Express are running elevated offers on the full SkyMiles card lineup from August 27 through November 4, 2026. Per Delta's own newsroom: Reserve Business earns 200,000 miles after $20,000 in six months; Platinum Business 100,000 after $8,000; Gold Business 90,000 after $6,000. On the consumer side, Platinum earns up to 90,000 miles plus a $300 statement credit after $4,000, Gold up to 80,000 miles plus $250 after $3,000, and Reserve takes a different shape — two round-trip Delta Comfort certificates plus 50,000 miles after $10,000.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the clearest read yet on what Delta miles cost Amex to buy, and it lands while Chase counters with a 200,000-point offer on Sapphire Reserve for Business (after $30,000 in six months, $795 annual fee). Both issuers are paying up for premium small-business spend at the same moment.

YOUR MOVE — For most readers the consumer Platinum is the efficient play: 90,000 miles plus $300 for $4,000 of spend is the best ratio on the board. The 200,000-mile Reserve Business offer is only worth chasing if $20,000 of organic spend is genuinely in front of you. Check your Amex once-per-lifetime eligibility through the pre-qualification tool before applying, and note the Reserve consumer offer pays in certificates with 21-day advance-purchase rules — not miles.

5. Wyndham's flat award chart is gone — the 45,000-point tier is live

WHAT HAPPENED — On September 15, Wyndham Rewards replaced its three-tier chart with four: 5,000, 15,000, 30,000 and 45,000 points per free night, confirmed on Wyndham's own reward-tier page. The bottom rung drops from 7,500 to 5,000, and a new 45,000-point ceiling lands on the top properties. Points-plus-cash tiers move in step at 500, 1,500, 3,000 and 4,500 points. Wyndham says awards booked before September 15 are honored at the rate booked, with refunds issued where prices fell.

WHY IT MATTERS — Wyndham's entire pitch was one flat rate for everything from a roadside Days Inn to a Vacasa beach house. That arbitrage is over. Wyndham has not published how many properties moved up; independent counts put it at roughly a third.

YOUR MOVE — Reprice any Wyndham award you're holding — if it dropped, you're owed the difference, and Wyndham says refunds are automatic, so verify rather than assume. The new 5,000-point floor is a real improvement for budget stays and the best reason to keep earning here. But stop treating Wyndham points as a Vacasa hack; the top-end rentals are the properties most likely sitting at 45,000.

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: The 70% Chase-to-Marriott bonus, but only as a top-up against a confirmed booking — transferring on spec at 1.2 cents a point is how you turn good Chase points into mediocre hotel points.

Biggest risk: Wells Fargo gifting ends September 25. If you pool rewards with a partner, you have five days, and there is no appeal after the deadline.
