The Upgrade Brief — Monday, September 21, 2026
Monday, September 21, 2026
The transfer game is being rewritten this week: Chase is taking something away, Citi is adding something new, and the clock is running on both.
1. Chase's Hyatt haircut hits every Sapphire Preferred holder in 9 days
WHAT HAPPENED — Chase's own Sapphire Preferred benefits page now states that Ultimate Rewards points transfer to World of Hyatt at 4:3. Accounts opened before June 15, 2026 keep 1:1 only "through September 30, 2026"; on October 1, everyone on the Preferred moves to the new rate. Ink Business Preferred is widely reported to be getting the same treatment, while the Sapphire Reserve cards are reported to keep 1:1. We confirmed the Preferred terms on Chase's page, but not the Ink or Reserve terms.
WHY IT MATTERS — At 4:3, 1,000 UR points become 750 Hyatt points. A 20,000-point Hyatt night that used to cost 20,000 UR points will cost about 26,700, roughly a third more. Hyatt was the best reason to hold Chase points, and for Preferred-only households that edge just got smaller.
YOUR MOVE — If you hold only the Preferred and have a Hyatt stay you're confident about in the next year, transfer before October 1. Don't dump your whole balance on spec, because Hyatt points don't come back to Chase. If anyone in your household holds a Reserve, check that card's transfer ratio on the transfer screen before you move anything. Offer ends: Sept. 30, 2026 (last day for legacy 1:1)

2. Citi lands Japan Airlines, and quietly makes the Strata Premier bonus once per lifetime
WHAT HAPPENED — As of September 20, Citi ThankYou points are reported to transfer to JAL Mileage Bank at 1:1 from annual-fee cards and 1:0.7 from no-fee cards. There's a 30% launch bonus through October 24, which works out to 1:1.3 on premium cards. A 25% bonus to Avianca LifeMiles is also reported through the same date. Separately, Citi's own Strata Premier application page now says the bonus "is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account." It used to be a 48-month rule.
WHY IT MATTERS — JAL fills a real gap for Citi: it's a strong oneworld program for Asia premium cabins, and for now it's exclusive among the big transferable currencies. The eligibility change is a lasting setback for churners. If you've ever held a Premier or Strata Premier, you're likely locked out of the bonus.
YOUR MOVE — Don't transfer to JAL until you've found award space you'll actually book. Note that JAL generally limits award redemptions to yourself and immediate family. If you've never held a Premier or Strata Premier, you still qualify, but only once, so apply when the public offer is at a peak. Offer ends: Oct. 24, 2026 (JAL 30% and LifeMiles 25%, per multiple reports)
Verified: Sept. 21, 2026. The Strata eligibility language is confirmed on Citi.com; the JAL partnership and bonus ratios could not be confirmed on a Citi page (the ThankYou transfer page didn't render and Citi's product pages don't list JAL yet). · Source: https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/citi-strata-premier-credit-card
3. Delta Amex bonuses are at their 2026 highs, including 200K on the Reserve Business
WHAT HAPPENED — Delta's newsroom confirms elevated welcome offers across all six co-branded Amex cards through November 4. Reserve Business: 200,000 miles after $20K in six months. Platinum Business: 100,000 after $8K. Gold Business: 90,000 after $6K. On the personal side, the Reserve offers two round-trip Delta Comfort certificates plus 50,000 miles after $10K. Platinum offers up to 90,000 miles plus a $300 credit after $4K, and Gold up to 80,000 plus $250 after $3K.
WHY IT MATTERS — Delta calls 200K its highest bonus-mile offer of the year, and the Comfort certificates cover the U.S. 48, Puerto Rico and USVI with no blackout dates. For Delta-hub flyers, these offers are worth well more than the first-year fees.
YOUR MOVE — If you can put $20K of real business spend on the Reserve Business in six months, it's the headline play. If not, the personal Platinum at up to 90K plus $300 is the easier win. The "up to" offers vary by applicant, so check your offer before applying. Amex's once-per-lifetime rules still apply. Offer ends: Nov. 4, 2026

4. Chase-to-Marriott at 70% ties the all-time high, but be selective
WHAT HAPPENED — Chase is offering a 70% bonus on Ultimate Rewards transfers to Marriott Bonvoy through October 15, so 1,000 UR points become 1,700 Bonvoy points. Every major outlet is reporting the offer, and it ties the richest Chase-Marriott bonus on record.
WHY IT MATTERS — Bonvoy pricing is dynamic, and UR points have better uses, especially Hyatt for Reserve holders. Even at 1:1.7, this only wins for a specific, high-value Marriott stay you've already priced in points.
YOUR MOVE — Price the exact Marriott stay first. Transfer only if 1.7 Bonvoy points beats what one UR point gets you elsewhere. Preferred holders losing their 1:1 Hyatt rate on October 1 have a new reason to take a closer look. Never transfer speculatively. Offer ends: Oct. 15, 2026
Verified: Sept. 21, 2026. The bonus sits behind the Ultimate Rewards login and could not be viewed on a public Chase page, so confirm the 1:1.7 rate on the transfer screen before you move points. · Source: https://thepointsguy.com/news/chase-marriott-70-percent-transfer-bonus/ (lead only)
5. IHG's Q4 promo: register now, but the first stay earns nothing extra
WHAT HAPPENED — IHG's global fall promotion pays 2X base points on the second and later stays booked direct, and 3X when booked in the IHG app, WeChat or LINE. It covers stays from October 1 to December 31, 2026, and pre-registration is open September 17–30. Award nights, Points + Cash and third-party bookings don't qualify, and only base points are multiplied.
WHY IT MATTERS — For anyone with multiple IHG stays in Q4, this is one of the better chain promos of the fall, well ahead of Hilton's 1,000–3,000-point offer. Stays completed before you register don't count, even inside the promo window.
YOUR MOVE — Register before your first Q4 stay, ideally this week, and book through the IHG app to get 3X. If you only have one IHG stay planned, this promo does nothing for you. Offer ends: Dec. 31, 2026 (stays); pre-registration Sept. 17–30

Bottom line
Best opportunity: Delta's 200K Reserve Business offer, or 90K plus $300 on the personal Platinum, through Nov. 4.
Biggest risk: the Chase-to-Hyatt nerf on Oct. 1. Sapphire Preferred holders have nine days to lock in 1:1 for stays they know they'll book.
