The bill is coming due: United and Citi just made status and annual fees more expensive, while Chase papers over a weak hotel transfer with a big-sounding bonus — and a vendor breach is quietly handing phishers your itinerary.

1. Chase dumps six transfer bonuses on the table. Only the Avios one is worth your points.

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase opened November with a wave of Ultimate Rewards transfer bonuses: 30% to British Airways Club, Iberia Plus and Aer Lingus AerClub (1:1.3) through December 1, 30% to Wyndham Rewards through December 3, and an eye-catching 80% to IHG One Rewards (1:1.8) running from 12:00 a.m. ET November 1 to 11:59 p.m. ET December 3. Capital One is separately running 20% to Air France-KLM Flying Blue through November 30. I could not confirm these on Chase's own transfer page, which sits behind a cardholder login — the terms above come from offer fine print reported independently by Doctor of Credit and One Mile at a Time on November 1 and InsideFlyer on November 2.

WHY IT MATTERS — The 80% headline is the worst deal in the batch: IHG points are worth roughly half a cent, so even at 1:1.8 you're converting a ~1.7-cent Chase point into under a cent of hotel value, and IHG routinely sells points outright at about that price. The Avios 30% is the real find, because the Avios family prices short-haul and off-peak partner awards low enough that a 23% discount on the points cost actually moves the needle.

YOUR MOVE — Transfer to Avios only against a confirmed award you've already priced and can hold. Skip the IHG bonus entirely; if you need IHG points, watch for a points sale instead. Never speculatively transfer — all of these are one-way.

2. The Amadeus breach is bigger than any one airline — and the phishing wave starts now.

WHAT HAPPENED — Japan Airlines disclosed that Amadeus IT Group, which runs its reservation, ticketing and check-in systems, was breached, exposing data on about 92,000 JAL and Japan Transocean Air customers. Names, booking reference codes and flight details were taken for all of them; roughly 2,000 also had passport numbers, frequent flyer numbers, email addresses and phone numbers exposed. JAL says credit card numbers were not compromised. ANA and Cathay Pacific have reported exposure through the same vendor, with Cathay citing roughly 53,000 bookings.

WHY IT MATTERS — Amadeus sits behind hundreds of airlines, so the affected population is almost certainly still growing, and a leaked booking reference plus a real flight number is exactly what a convincing "your flight was cancelled, confirm your card" email needs.

YOUR MOVE — Treat any unexpected message about an upcoming trip as hostile: go to the airline's app or type the URL yourself rather than clicking. If you hold a JAL, ANA or Cathay booking from the past three years, change the account password and turn on two-factor authentication. Anyone whose passport number was exposed should watch for account-takeover attempts on their loyalty balances, which are the real target.

3. United ends the flight-based path to status — and 1K just got 14% more expensive.

WHAT HAPPENED — In a member memo dated October 13, United confirmed that from 2027 Premier Qualifying Points are the only route to status; the PQF-plus-PQP option is gone. Silver, Gold and Platinum hold at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 PQP, but 1K rises from 28,000 to 32,000. United still requires at least four United or United Express flights a year, and partner flights don't count toward that minimum. Eligible cardholders get a 2027 head start deposit of 300, 600, 900 or 1,600 PQP by tier, including those who open a qualifying card by December 31. United's own qualification page renders dynamically and I could not read it directly; the thresholds above are consistent across The Points Guy, Forbes and Business Traveller reporting on the same memo.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the end of cheap status for anyone who flew a lot of short, inexpensive segments; a flyer who mixed 60 flights with 22,000 PQP now needs roughly 45% more spend to land in the same seat. It also quietly converts United elite status into a credit-card product, since card spend is now one of the few levers left.

YOUR MOVE — If you're chasing or holding 1K, do the 2027 math before January, not in September. If a United card is already in your plan, opening it before December 31 captures the head start deposit — but don't open one solely to buy 1,600 PQP toward a 32,000 target. Everyone else: Silver through Platinum didn't change, so sit tight.

4. Citi takes the AAdvantage Platinum Select to $150 — its first fee hike since 2018.

WHAT HAPPENED — American, Citi and Mastercard announced on October 27 that the annual fee on the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard and the Citi / AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard rises from $99 to $150 on January 24, 2027, the same day new benefits land for existing cardmembers. The additions: 3x miles on AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars bookings, 2x at gas stations now including EV charging, 2x on select streaming and on rides and rails, a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit of up to $120 every four years, up to $100 a year in inflight statement credits, complimentary Walmart+, and an American flight discount raised from $125 to $150 after $20,000 in annual spend. The fee is waived for the first 12 months on new accounts.

WHY IT MATTERS — A $51 increase against up to $100 in inflight credits and a $120 PreCheck credit is defensible on paper, but only if you actually fly American and buy things onboard. For the occasional AA flyer who keeps the card purely for the free checked bag, the math just got meaningfully worse.

YOUR MOVE — Keep it if the free first checked bag plus preferred boarding already justifies $99 across two or more AA round trips a year; the inflight credit then makes $150 a wash. If you fly American once a year, use the window before January 24 to decide — and remember a product change to a no-fee AAdvantage card preserves your Loyalty Point history where a cancellation does not.

5. Hotel promo clock: Marriott's registration shuts November 13, and Hilton's offer is the better one anyway.

WHAT HAPPENED — Marriott's current global promotion pays 1,500 bonus points per paid stay of two or more nights, plus 3,000 more at resorts, on stays from September 22 through November 22 — but registration closes November 13 and must happen before your first qualifying stay. Hilton's "More Points to Play" runs longer and pays better: 3,000 bonus points per stay at luxury, lifestyle, resort and all-inclusive properties, 1,000 everywhere else, on stays completed between October 15 and December 31, with no cap on the number of stays. IHG is separately discounting reward nights 15% at new and recently renovated hotels; IHG's own offer page shows different end dates by region (November 30 and December 31, 2026) and I could not verify the April 2027 date circulating elsewhere, so check the date on your specific property before booking.

WHY IT MATTERS — Both chain promos are registration-gated and retroactive only to registration, not to the start of the window, so an unregistered stay this week is money left on the table. Marriott's is also the weaker offer and the one about to close.

YOUR MOVE — Register for both right now even if nothing is booked; it costs nothing and Marriott's door closes November 13. Make sure your Bonvoy earning preference is set to points rather than airline miles, or Marriott stays won't count. Then route discretionary Q4 nights to Hilton luxury and resort brands, where 3,000 points per stay is the richest per-stay bonus on the board.

Offer ends: November 13, 2026 (Marriott registration) · December 31, 2026 (Hilton stays) · Verified: November 2, 2026 · Source: https://loyaltylobby.com/2026/10/14/begins-today-hilton-honors-more-points-to-play-promotion-for-1000-or-3000-bonus-points-per-stay-october-15-december-31-2026/

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: the 30% Chase-to-Avios bonus through December 1 — the only transfer bonus on the board that beats holding your points, and only against an award you've already priced.

Biggest risk: speculative transfers chasing the 80% IHG headline, which locks a 1.7-cent point into a half-cent currency you can simply buy cheaper.
