The Upgrade Brief — Friday, October 30, 2026

Friday, October 30, 2026

The 2027 rulebooks are landing early, and almost every deadline that matters now sits between tomorrow night and New Year's Eve.

1. Southwest just sweetened its card bonuses — and this is the last year one can buy you a Companion Pass

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase raised welcome offers across the Southwest consumer lineup this week: the Rapid Rewards Priority card now offers 90,000 points after $3,000 in three months ($229 annual fee), and the Plus card offers 80,000 points after $1,000 in three months ($99). The timing is not an accident. Southwest's own 2027 program pages confirm that Companion Pass qualifying points are retired after December 31, 2026, and that from January 1 the Pass is earned with Tier Qualifying Points — which explicitly exclude new-cardmember welcome bonuses, referral bonuses, anniversary points and category spend bonuses.

WHY IT MATTERS — For a decade, the credit card welcome bonus has been the cheat code for the single best perk in domestic travel. In 61 days that door closes permanently: starting January 1, a card helps you toward the Pass only at 1 TQP per $1 of ordinary spend, and the unlimited-trips bar rises to 140,000 TQPs.

YOUR MOVE — If you want a Companion Pass, start now. You need 135,000 Companion Pass qualifying points in calendar 2026, so a 90,000-point bonus gets you two-thirds of the way and leaves roughly 45,000 to cover with spend or flying before December 31. Earn it this year and you hold unlimited companion travel through December 31, 2027 — Southwest has confirmed 2026 earners keep the old deal for the full following year. Note that Chase's application pages publish no end date for these offers, and we could not verify a current Southwest business-card bonus on Chase's site, so don't build a plan around pairing one. 2. American raises AAdvantage card fees for the first time since 2018 — and existing cardholders are in the blast radius

WHAT HAPPENED — American and Citi announced on October 27 that the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select and Citi AAdvantage Business cards both move from a $99 to a $150 annual fee on January 24, 2027. The same date brings a benefits package: 3X miles on AAdvantage Hotels and Cars bookings, 2X at gas stations including EV charging, 2X on select streaming and on Rides and Rails, up to $100 a year in inflight statement credits, a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit of up to $120 every four years, a complimentary Walmart+ membership, and the annual AA flight discount rising from $125 to $150 at $20,000 of spend.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the first AA co-brand fee increase in eight years, and both issuers confirm the new benefits and the new fee reach current cardmembers on the same day. It is also a clear read on where the mid-tier co-brand is heading: Citi is defending a $150 card with credits and multipliers rather than competing on miles.

YOUR MOVE — Do the arithmetic before January 24, not after. If you reliably use the inflight credit and Walmart+, the extra $51 pays for itself twice over. If you hold the card purely for the free checked bag, it still clears — one bag on one round trip beats the fee. If you hold it for neither, downgrade or cancel in the window before renewal. New applicants still get the first year waived. 3. Bilt is retiring 4% Bilt Cash — and you have to opt out to keep it

WHAT HAPPENED — Bilt published its 2027 program updates on October 27. Flexible Bilt Cash mode, the 4%-back-on-everyday-spend setup, is being retired; cardholders who want to keep it must opt out of the new benefits in card settings before their card anniversary date. Palladium's separate $200 Bilt Cash and $400 hotel credits consolidate into a single $600 annual Bilt Cash credit, Obsidian's $100 hotel credit becomes $100 of Bilt Cash, both now posting on the card anniversary instead of January 1, and hotel redemptions shift from monthly to twice a year on January 1. Separately — and not mentioned in that announcement — Bilt posted a notice on its own World of Hyatt transfer page on October 1 that transfers drop from 1:1 to 4:3 on January 1, 2027.

WHY IT MATTERS — Two things are moving in opposite directions and the press coverage has blurred them. The Bilt Cash change is reversible by your own action; the Hyatt devaluation is not, and it takes a 25% bite out of the single most valuable thing Bilt points do. Bilt also did some real giving here: Bilt Cash now expires 12 months after it's earned rather than at year-end, and Daily Rewards launches January 15.

YOUR MOVE — Two separate calendar entries. First, go into card settings and decide on Flexible Bilt Cash before your anniversary date — note that Bilt gives an anniversary trigger, not a fixed December 31 cutoff, despite how this has been reported elsewhere. Second, if you have a Hyatt redemption you're confident about, move those points at 1:1 before January 1; if you don't, leave them in Bilt rather than speculatively stockpiling Hyatt points you may never spend. 4. Nine transfer bonuses die tomorrow night

WHAT HAPPENED — October 31 is a cliff. The bonuses ending include Amex Membership Rewards to Air France-KLM Flying Blue at 25%, Capital One miles to the British Airways Club at 20%, Citi ThankYou to Qatar Airways Privilege Club at up to 35% depending on transfer size, and Marriott Bonvoy to Air Canada Aeroplan at 15%. The one that survives: Amex to Marriott Bonvoy at 35%, which runs through December 10. One caveat we'll state plainly — Amex and Capital One publish transfer bonus terms only inside the logged-in transfer screen, so we could not independently verify these ratios on a public issuer page.

WHY IT MATTERS — A 25% bonus to Flying Blue is the difference between 50,000 and 62,500 miles for the same 50,000 Amex points, and Flying Blue Promo Rewards are among the few reliably cheap ways into Europe left. These windows close without warning and rarely return at the same ratio.

YOUR MOVE — Confirm the live ratio on your issuer's transfer screen before you pull the trigger, then transfer only against a specific award you have already found and can hold. Points transferred out are one-way and non-refundable; a 25% bonus on miles you never redeem is a 100% loss. If you have no concrete booking, let these expire and use the Marriott window instead — 35% through December 10 is a genuinely strong rate with six weeks to plan. Offer ends: October 31, 2026 (Amex–Marriott runs to December 10, 2026) · Verified: October 30, 2026 · Source: Amex and Capital One in-account transfer pages (terms not publicly posted)

5. IHG's Destination Deals close Sunday — up to 30% off, including Dubai, Lisbon and Milan

WHAT HAPPENED — IHG is running 25% to 30% off at participating hotels across the Americas and 30% off across the rest of its global footprint. The booking window is October 27 through November 1, stays must fall between October 30 and December 13, and the rate is IHG One Rewards members only. Featured markets include Dubai, Istanbul, Lisbon, Milan, Dublin, Vancouver, Nashville, Seattle and Orlando.

WHY IT MATTERS — A cash discount this deep on a six-week stay window is the cleanest arbitrage in hotels right now: you keep your points, you still earn on the stay, and in several of these markets the discounted cash rate undercuts what an award night would cost you in value.

YOUR MOVE — If you have December travel anywhere on that list, price it by Sunday. Watch the fine print: bookings require three days' advance notice and carry a one-night cancellation penalty inside seven days of arrival, so this is for trips you're certain about. Not a reason to invent a trip. Offer ends: November 1, 2026 · Verified: October 30, 2026 · Source: https://www.ihg.com/offers/destination-deals

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: a Southwest Companion Pass bought with a 90,000-point welcome bonus — the last calendar year this will ever be possible, and the richest return on a single application in the U.S. market.

Biggest risk: transferring points this weekend just to catch an expiring bonus. Nine bonuses die tomorrow, Bilt-to-Hyatt dies January 1, and the fastest way to lose money in this hobby is to move points you haven't yet decided how to spend.
