The Upgrade Brief — Wednesday, October 28, 2026

Wednesday, October 28, 2026

The 2027 rulebooks are landing all at once — Bilt, Amex and United all rewrote their fine print this month — and the October transfer-bonus window closes in three days.

1. Bilt is taking back 4% — and the clock is your card anniversary, not January 1

WHAT HAPPENED — Bilt published its 2027 program updates on October 27, retiring the Flexible Bilt Cash mode that pays 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spend. Anyone approved from 2027 on gets only the Housing-only track, worth up to 1.25X points on rent or mortgage, and existing cardholders are moved to the new benefits automatically on their card account anniversary unless they opt out in card settings first. Bilt Cash now expires at the end of the month 12 months after it is earned — no more year-end reset — and from January 1, 2027 Bilt Cash hotel redemptions drop from monthly to twice a year, capped at $100 a year for Blue/Silver, $200 for Gold/Platinum and $400 for eligible Palladium.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the rare nerf with a per-person deadline: there is no single date to circle, so a cardholder who waits for a reminder email will simply wake up on a worse earn rate. The sweetener — Palladium's $200 Bilt Cash and $400 hotel credits merging into a flat $600 — only lands if you accept the new structure.

YOUR MOVE — Open the Bilt app today, find your card anniversary date, and decide before it: if 4% on everyday spend beats 1.25X on housing for your actual spending, opt out of the new benefits now. The switch is one-way, so you can move to the new track later but never back. Also spend down any Bilt Cash earned early in 2026 — it is now on a rolling 12-month clock.

2. Amex confirms it: no more one-night Fine Hotels + Resorts credit runs

WHAT HAPPENED — American Express has confirmed in its own travel benefits terms that starting January 1, 2027, every eligible use of the Platinum Card's $600 lodging credit — two up to $300 semi-annual statement credits — requires a stay of at least two nights. That closes the long-standing gap where Fine Hotels + Resorts had no minimum while The Hotel Collection already required two nights. Amex also added Airbnb Luxe to the credit and launched a new up to $250 annual Airbnb Experiences credit, unlocked once per calendar year by booking a qualifying prepaid Luxe stay through Amex Travel on a Platinum or Business Platinum Card, with 5x Membership Rewards points on eligible prepaid Airbnb stays booked through Amex Travel.

WHY IT MATTERS — The one-night FHR booking was the single easiest way to convert a $300 credit into real value without reshaping a trip; from January it costs you a second night of hotel rate. The Airbnb additions are a genuine expansion, but they are gated behind Luxe pricing, which is not where most Platinum holders book.

YOUR MOVE — If you still have a 2026 lodging credit sitting unused, book a prepaid one-night FHR stay through Amex Travel before January 1 and bank the value while the old rule holds. From 2027, plan the credit around trips you were already taking for two nights or more — and do not pay a Luxe premium just to unlock the $250 Experiences credit.

3. United ends flight-based status; Delta holds the line for a third year

WHAT HAPPENED — United is retiring Premier Qualifying Flights entirely on January 1, 2027, leaving Premier Qualifying Points as the only metric, and raising Premier 1K from 28,000 to 32,000 PQP. Silver, Gold and Platinum stay at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 PQP, a four-flight minimum on United or United Express remains, and from February 1, 2027 PlusPoints upgrades move to demand-based pricing. Twelve days later, a Delta spokesperson confirmed on October 22 that 2027 Medallion thresholds hold flat for a third straight year — 5,000 MQDs for Silver, 10,000 Gold, 15,000 Platinum and 28,000 Diamond — with no rollover above a threshold.

WHY IT MATTERS — United just removed the last path to status that rewarded flying a lot rather than spending a lot, which pushes cheap-fare road warriors toward co-brand spend or toward Delta. Delta, after years of being the program that moved the goalposts, is now the stable one — a reversal worth noticing.

YOUR MOVE — If you are a United flyer chasing 1K on segments, run your 2027 numbers now: at 32,000 PQP you may be better served by taking Platinum and putting the difference into a card that earns PQP, or by matching to Delta where the bar did not move. Hold an eligible United card open through December 31, 2026 to collect the 2027 starter PQP deposit.

Verification note: United's own MileagePlus page renders only in-browser, so the PQP figures above were confirmed across independent same-day reports (AwardWallet, InsideFlyer, Upgraded Points, Frequent Miler) rather than read off United's page directly. Delta's numbers come from a Delta spokesperson's confirmation; Delta has published no press release.

4. Eight transfer bonuses die this weekend — one runs to December 10

WHAT HAPPENED — October's transfer-bonus crop expires almost all at once. Amex to Aeroméxico Rewards at 20% and Wyndham to United at 100% end October 30; Citi ThankYou to Qatar Airways Privilege Club (tiered: 15% under 50,000 points, 25% at 50,000–99,999, 35% at 100,000+), Capital One to the British Airways Club at 20%, and Amex to Flying Blue at 25% all end October 31. Running longer: Amex Membership Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy at 35%, a 1:1.35 rate through December 10, and Capital One to Virgin Atlantic at 30% through November 20. Chase currently has nothing live — its 70% Marriott bonus expired October 15.

WHY IT MATTERS — The Qatar tier structure rewards a single large transfer, which is the opposite of the usual advice to transfer only what a booking needs; and the Amex-to-Marriott bonus is the longest runway anyone has right now, which matters because Marriott is where transferable points are weakest per point.

YOUR MOVE — Only transfer against award space you have already priced and can hold. If you have a Qatar Qsuite itinerary confirmed, a single 100,000-point Citi transfer at 35% before October 31 is the standout. Skip the Marriott bonus unless you have a specific high-rate property priced out — 35% does not fix Marriott's dynamic pricing, and Amex points are worth more elsewhere. Transfers are irreversible.

Offer ends: October 30–31, 2026 for most; December 10, 2026 for Amex–Marriott · Verified: October 28, 2026 · Source: Qatar Airways Privilege Club promotion terms via Upgraded Points · Transfer bonus tracker

Verification note: Amex's Membership Rewards transfer page is behind a login, so the 35% Marriott bonus and its December 10 end date were confirmed across independent trackers (LoyaltyLobby, Frequent Miler, Upgraded Points, Roame) rather than on Amex's own page. Confirm the bonus shows in your account before transferring. The Citi–Qatar bonus is run by Qatar Airways, not Citi, and does not appear on Citi's transfer-partner page.

5. While everyone else trims, Citi is loading up the AAdvantage portfolio

WHAT HAPPENED — Citi added an up to $200 annual inKind dining credit to the $695 AAdvantage Executive card on October 26, split into two $100 halves (January–June and July–December), redeemable by paying through the inKind app with the card linked as a payment method — and with no annual fee increase. The same week, up to $180 in Turo credits became a permanent benefit on the AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. American's own card page currently shows an 80,000-mile offer on the Executive card after $8,000 in three months, and a limited-time 75,000-mile offer on the Citi/AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard after $5,000 in five months, with the fee waived the first year then $99.

WHY IT MATTERS — Amex is adding minimum-stay strings to its credits and Bilt is clawing back earn rates; Citi is going the other way and buying share in the premium co-brand fight with benefits that do not require a trip. For AAdvantage loyalists, the Executive card's effective cost just dropped by $200 if you eat at inKind restaurants.

YOUR MOVE — Executive cardholders should register in the inKind app now and check whether any participating restaurants are near you — the credit is worthless if they are not, and the first $100 half expires June 30. Business owners weighing an AAdvantage card have a 75,000-mile window at a waived first-year fee.

Offer ends: not stated for the 75K business offer; inKind credit is ongoing · Verified: October 28, 2026 · Source: American Airlines official card offers

Verification note: the inKind and Turo credits are not yet reflected on American's public card pages; they were confirmed across independent same-day reports (One Mile at a Time, Doctor of Credit, InsideFlyer, Frequent Miler, Upgraded Points). Check your card's benefit terms in your Citi account before counting on them.

Bottom line

Best opportunity: burn any unused 2026 Amex Platinum lodging credit on a prepaid one-night Fine Hotels + Resorts stay before January 1 — it is the last window on free money that disappears on its own.

Biggest risk: Bilt's 4% earn rate ends silently at your card anniversary, not on a date anyone will remind you about — check the app this week or get downgraded by default.
