Three programs re-priced loyalty in the span of a week, and every one of them moved in the same direction: away from how far you fly and toward how much you spend.

1. United kills flight segments and raises the 1K bar 14%

WHAT HAPPENED — In a member memo Tuesday, United confirmed that from January 1, 2027, MileagePlus status will be earned on Premier Qualifying Points alone. The PQF-plus-PQP path is gone. Premier 1K jumps to 32,000 PQPs from 28,000; Silver (6,000), Gold (12,000) and Platinum (18,000) PQP thresholds hold steady. The four-flight minimum on United and United Express metal stays, and partner flights still don't count. Co-branded cardholders who earn status get a 5% head start on the following year, and United Quest keeps its 1,000 annual bonus PQPs.

WHY IT MATTERS — Cheap-segment mileage running is dead at United. Status is now a function of dollars spent — on fares, or on United credit cards — and only 1K got more expensive, which tells you exactly which customer United is re-pricing.

YOUR MOVE — If any part of your 2027 plan leaned on segments, rebuild it now. Finish your 2026 qualification to lock status through January 2028, then model the co-brand PQP path: for most people the card is now the cheapest marginal PQP available. 1K chasers should decide before January whether 32,000 PQPs is worth it, or whether Platinum plus a Star Alliance partner relationship is the better buy. 2. Alaska lets you pick how you earn — and Bank of America is about to join the transfer game

WHAT HAPPENED — Alaska's Atmos Rewards overhaul went live October 1. Members now choose whether they earn points and status points by distance flown, price paid, or segments, with the choice applying to flights departing on or after January 1, 2027 and one switch permitted per calendar year. Existing members who do nothing stay on distance; anyone joining on or after January 1, 2027 defaults to price paid. Atmos Communities expanded from two to six, from November 2 Platinum and Titanium members can bring eligible children plus one companion into Premium Class at no charge when space allows, an Atmos debit card arrives in early 2027, and — the headline for points people — eligible Bank of America cardholders will be able to transfer points into Atmos Rewards in 2027.

WHY IT MATTERS — Alaska is the only major U.S. program letting members opt into the earning model that suits them, which is a direct shot at anyone unhappy with revenue-based earning elsewhere. The Bank of America piece is bigger: BofA has sat out the transferable-points war entirely, and an inbound pipe into one of the last distance-based award charts would change the calculus on cards most of this audience has never seriously considered.

YOUR MOVE — Log in and make your earning election deliberately rather than letting the default decide; long-haul flyers on cheap fares should stay on distance, while people buying short expensive business fares should run the price-paid math. Don't move money toward Bank of America yet — the transfer partners, ratios and bonuses are unannounced, and ratios are where these deals are won or lost. Pre-registration for the debit card is open at atmosrewards.com/debit. 3. American is handing out Executive Platinum — register by October 23

WHAT HAPPENED — American's targeted Elevated Instant Status Pass matches Delta, United, Southwest and JetBlue elites one tier above their equivalent, and gives top-tier members (Delta 360, United Global Services, EXP equivalents) instant Executive Platinum plus four Flagship Lounge single-visit passes good for 182 days. Per American's own terms, requests must be in by 11:59pm CT on October 23, 2026; complimentary status runs four months, and completing the requirement holds status for the remainder of the 2027 membership year. Reporting puts the retention target at 50,000 Loyalty Points — note that figure is not published in American's public Instant Status Pass terms, so confirm the number inside your own offer.

WHY IT MATTERS — Executive Platinum normally takes 200,000 Loyalty Points. A four-month, five-figure-LP path to systemwide upgrades and Flagship access is the best status arbitrage on the board this year.

YOUR MOVE — Check the Promotions tab in your AAdvantage account today; if nothing's there and you have a corporate travel relationship, try American's Corporate Status Match Plus page. Read your offer's LP target before you redirect any spend, and don't register until you know you can actually fly it inside the window. 4. Lufthansa is set to take 44.9% of TAP Air Portugal

WHAT HAPPENED — Lufthansa Group has reportedly won the bidding for a 44.9% stake in TAP Air Portugal, beating Air France-KLM with an all-cash offer against AF-KLM's cash-and-shares structure. Portuguese press reported the outcome Tuesday, with the government expected to make it official at an extraordinary cabinet meeting today. The price has not been disclosed and the deal still needs regulatory approval, so treat the terms as reported rather than signed.

WHY IT MATTERS — TAP is already Star Alliance but sits outside the transatlantic joint venture, which is precisely why its fares and award space have been so useful. Pull Lisbon into Lufthansa's orbit and the structural incentive to undercut Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich on Europe-Brazil and Europe-Africa traffic goes away.

YOUR MOVE — Nothing to book off the headline. If you hold TAP Miles&Go miles or rely on TAP award space to reach Lisbon, Brazil or West Africa, use it inside the next 12 months. Watch for a joint-venture antitrust filing — that, not the stake itself, is the signal that pricing is about to change. 5. U.S. Bank's rebuilt BMW cards double your points — if you finance through BMW

WHAT HAPPENED — U.S. Bank and BMW Financial Services launched redesigned BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad Mastercards on Monday. No annual fee on any of them. Cardholders earn 3X per dollar at BMW, MINI and Motorrad, plus on eligible gas and EV charging and tollway charges, and 1X elsewhere. Points redeem at a penny each, rise to an "accelerated 2X points value" at dealerships, and double outright — 10,000 points for $200 instead of $100 — once you enroll an eligible BMW Financial Services loan or lease, with Auto Sweeps applying them to payments automatically. There's a 10,000-point bonus after $500 in purchases within 90 days, and 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 billing cycles, then a variable 17.74%–30.74%.

WHY IT MATTERS — This is the sharpest version yet of a trend worth watching: automakers buying loyalty with captive-finance currency rather than cash back. Doubling redemption value only inside BMW's own financing arm costs the bank little and locks the customer in for the length of a lease.

YOUR MOVE — Narrow but real. If you have a BMW, MINI or Motorrad loan or lease with BMW Financial Services, 3X on gas, EV charging and tolls swept into that payment is effectively 6% back on categories most no-fee cards pay 1–3% on, and the first-use bonus clears easily. If you don't hold BMW financing, the doubling never triggers and this is a 3% gas card with no transfer partners — your existing points stack beats it. Nobody should carry a balance here; that APR erases the math immediately. U.S. Bank hasn't said whether existing BMW card accounts convert automatically, so current holders should confirm their terms. Offer ends: N/A (10,000-point bonus requires $500 in 90 days of account opening) · Verified: October 14, 2026 · Source: https://ir.usbank.com/news-events/news/news-details/2026/U-S--Bank-and-BMW-Financial-Services-North-America-Launch-Expanded-Benefits-Simplified-Rewards-for-BMW-MINI-and-BMW-Motorrad-Card-Holders-in-the-U-S-/default.aspx

BOTTOM LINE

Best opportunity: American's Elevated Instant Status Pass — top-tier status for a fraction of the normal bar, and the window shuts October 23. Biggest risk: status is being re-priced toward spend across the industry — United's PQP-only 2027 rules and Alaska's price-paid default for new members are the same decision made twice, and the flying-based shortcuts are disappearing faster than the published thresholds suggest.
