Today's theme: Avios is where the value is this month — two banks are paying you to get there, while Air France-KLM quietly made its own miles worth less.

1. Qatar is paying 35% on big Citi transfers — and the tiers reward patience

WHAT HAPPENED — Qatar Airways Privilege Club launched a tiered transfer bonus on Citi ThankYou points on October 1, running through October 31. The bonus scales with the size of each single transaction: 15% on transfers up to 49,999 Avios, 25% on 50,000 to 99,999, and 35% on 100,000 or more. Citi is the only major US transfer partner eligible, and because the bonus comes from Qatar's side it will not appear on Citi's transfer screen.

WHY IT MATTERS — Qatar releases most of its Qsuite business class award space only to Avios members, so this is one of the few reliable routes into a genuinely top-tier product. The tier structure also quietly punishes anyone who transfers in dribs and drabs.

YOUR MOVE — If you are going in, go in once: four separate 25,000-point transfers earn 15% each, while one 100,000-point transfer earns 35%. Bonus Avios are due to post by November 30 rather than instantly, so do not transfer against an award you need to ticket this week, and treat this as speculative — Qsuite availability is thin even for Avios holders.

2. Sapphire Reserve's $125 IHG credit dies October 16 — the other four run to December

WHAT HAPPENED — Chase's Sapphire Reserve 10th-anniversary page lists five activate-then-spend merchant offers, and the IHG one is the first to expire: $125 back on $500 or more at a US IHG property, paid directly with the hotel by October 16. The rest run through December 14 — $250 back on $1,000 at participating Miraval and Alila properties, $350 on $1,500 at Wander, $200 on a $200 JSX flight, and $125 on $500 at SIXT. Separately, from October 1 the card's DoorDash benefit expanded to a complimentary DashPass plus up to $35 a month in credits, running through 2029.

WHY IT MATTERS — Taken together these are over $1,000 in credits sitting unclaimed on a card most people already pay $795 for. Chase notes they may not be available to all cardmembers, which means activation is the whole game.

YOUR MOVE — Open Chase Offers today and activate IHG first; you have a week to put $500 on an eligible stay, and it stacks with IHG's own Q4 promotion below. Then activate the four December offers now so the deadline is a spending decision later rather than an eligibility problem.

3. IHG's Q4 promo is live, uncapped, and book-in-the-app only for the top rate

WHAT HAPPENED — IHG One Rewards is running up to 3X points on stays worldwide from October 1 through December 31. Per IHG's own terms, direct bookings earn 2X and bookings made through the IHG app earn 3X, with no cap on bonus points. Two catches sit in the fine print: the bonus starts with your second qualifying stay, and nights must run over $30 total spend at a qualifying rate. Pre-registration closed September 30, but you can still register during the promotion — stays completed before you register do not count.

WHY IT MATTERS — An uncapped 3X global promo is the most generous structure IHG runs, and the app-only tier is a 50% premium for changing where you tap the book button.

YOUR MOVE — Register before your next stay, then book every Q4 IHG night in the app rather than the website. If you have one IHG stay planned this quarter, find a cheap second night to get past the first-stay exclusion. Award nights and Points & Cash stays earn nothing here, and bonus points do not count toward elite status.

4. Flying Blue split its awards into three fares — and Amex's 25% bonus is papering over it

WHAT HAPPENED — Since September 8, Air France and KLM awards price in three tiers instead of one. Light is the old saver number but strips the checked bag and, for most travelers, any changes or cancellations; Standard restores roughly what award tickets used to include, at more miles; Flex adds full flexibility and cuts long-haul carrier surcharges. A short-haul economy example that cost 10,000 miles now runs 10,000 Light, 13,000 Standard, or 17,000 Flex. Partner awards and La Première are unaffected, and existing tickets keep their old terms. Amex's 25% transfer bonus to Flying Blue runs through October 31.

WHY IT MATTERS — The headline saver price did not move, which is exactly the point — the old product now costs about 30% more miles and the trackers that quote lowest-available rates will not show it. A 25% transfer bonus arriving in the same window roughly cancels the increase, for one month.

YOUR MOVE — Price your actual itinerary at Standard, not Light, before deciding whether the Amex bonus is worth taking; Light without a bag or a change option is not the ticket you used to buy. Platinum and Ultimate elites keep bags, seats and waived change fees on Light, so status holders are the one group this bonus genuinely favors.

5. Capital One is paying 20% into Avios too — giving you a second door to Qatar

WHAT HAPPENED — Capital One is running a 20% bonus on transfers to The British Airways Club through October 31, lifting the usual 1:1 to 1,000 miles for 1,200 Avios. The bonus comes from Capital One, posts with the standard transfer, and carries no registration requirement and no cap. Because Avios is a shared currency across British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair and Qatar Airways Privilege Club, points moved to BA can be shifted between those programs.

WHY IT MATTERS — Paired with story one, two different banks are now subsidizing the same destination currency at the same time, which is unusual. It also matters that Avios' traditional sweet spots — short-haul American and Alaska partner awards — have been heavily devalued, so the case for Avios today rests mostly on Qatar.

YOUR MOVE — If Qsuite is the goal and you hold both currencies, run the Citi route first: a single 100,000-Avios transfer earns 35% versus Capital One's flat 20%. Use the Capital One bonus for Iberia and Aer Lingus transatlantic awards or to top up an Avios balance you are short on, and check the surcharges on any BA-operated redemption before committing — they can exceed the cash value of the miles.

Bottom line

Best opportunity: One 100,000-point Citi transfer to Qatar Privilege Club at a 35% bonus before October 31 — the only dependable way into Qsuite, at the best rate anyone is offering.

Biggest risk: Taking Amex's 25% Flying Blue bonus at face value and discovering the award you wanted is now a Standard fare costing 30% more miles than the number you budgeted.
