Amex's Two-Night FHR Rule: What Changes and How to Beat It
What changed
American Express has added one sentence to its Platinum Card hotel programs terms: "Effective January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will require a minimum two-night stay."
That is the whole change. The credit amount is untouched — Platinum Card Members still get up to $300 in statement credits semi-annually, up to $600 per calendar year, on prepaid bookings made through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app. What changes is the shortest booking that triggers it. Today a single night at a Fine Hotels + Resorts property counts. From January 1, it will not.
The rule is not new to the benefit — it is new to FHR. The Hotel Collection and Airbnb Luxe bookings already carry a two-night minimum. Amex has simply closed the one remaining gap, which means every lodging category the credit covers will work the same way next year.
How the credit works, and what a stay actually includes
The benefit Amex calls the $600 Lodging Credit pays out in two halves: up to $300 in statement credits per semi-annual period, on prepaid bookings made through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app. Unused credit does not roll forward — a half you don't spend is gone.
Three booking types qualify: Fine Hotels + Resorts, The Hotel Collection, and prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays. Airbnb Luxe requires linking an Airbnb account to your Amex account first.
The perks attached to the stay are separate from the credit, and this distinction is the key to everything below:
Fine Hotels + Resorts, included with every booking:
Room upgrade on arrival, when available
12pm check-in, when available
Guaranteed 4pm check-out
$100 credit toward eligible charges
Daily breakfast for two
Complimentary Wi-Fi
No minimum stay required for these benefits
The Hotel Collection, included with every booking:
Room upgrade on arrival, when available
12pm check-in, when available
Late 4pm check-out, when available
$100 credit toward eligible charges
No breakfast and no Wi-Fi included
Two-night minimum stay required
Note the last line of each list. Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits carry no minimum stay, and Amex has not changed that. The two-night rule arriving on January 1 applies only to Lodging Credit eligibility.
Who this actually hits
Both Platinum cards. Amex's own Lodging Credit terms state that "U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Members and Business Platinum Card Members are eligible for the benefit," and the January 1 change is written into the same terms. Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card Members were never eligible and are unaffected.
The real cost is not the lost night — it is the spend you must route through Amex Travel to collect. The credit only pays on prepaid bookings made through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app, where rates frequently run above what the same room costs booked direct, and prepaid means non-refundable. A one-night booking let you touch that channel briefly, take $300, and leave. From January you have to commit two nights at Amex Travel's rate to extract the same $300, which roughly doubles your exposure to both the rate premium and the cancellation risk.
Stacked on top is the semi-annual structure. The credit resets January to June and July to December, and unused halves expire. To capture all $600 next year you will need two separate qualifying stays, each of at least two consecutive nights — a minimum of four hotel nights a year booked through Amex Travel, in two different halves of the calendar.
The people this genuinely hurts are the ones who were using the benefit most efficiently: one-night harvesters, and business travelers whose trips are single overnights. If you already take multi-night leisure trips and book them through Amex Travel, your 2027 looks exactly like your 2026.
How to blunt it — or turn it around
Burn the current half on one-nighters before December 31. The July-to-December window is open now and the old rule still applies. If your second $300 is unspent, book one-night Fine Hotels + Resorts stays while single nights still qualify. This is the only workaround with a deadline, and it is the most valuable one on this list.
Split one trip across two halves. A stay that checks in December 30 and out January 2 straddles the reset. Amex pays statement credits against the period the charge posts, so plan the two halves around a single trip rather than hunting for two separate ones — a New Year's booking can do a lot of work.
Stop treating one-night FHR stays as dead. This is the detail most coverage is missing. The two-night rule governs the Lodging Credit only; Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits themselves carry no minimum stay. A one-night FHR booking in 2027 still delivers a room upgrade when available, 12pm check-in when available, guaranteed 4pm check-out, daily breakfast for two, and a $100 property credit. On a single night, $100 plus breakfast for two against one night's rate is often a better percentage return than the $300 was against two nights.
Use the $100 property credit as the real yardstick. Per night, FHR's included credit is worth more on short stays and the Lodging Credit is worth more on long ones. Two one-night stays now beat one two-night stay on property credits ($200 versus $100) but lose the $300. Run both numbers before you book — the answer flips depending on nightly rate.
Price Amex Travel against direct, every time. The two-night minimum only bites if you overpay to satisfy it. If Amex Travel's prepaid two-night rate exceeds the direct rate by more than $300, the credit is costing you money and the correct move is to book direct and let the credit expire.
Consider Airbnb Luxe for the long stay. Luxe has carried the two-night minimum all along, so January changes nothing there, and multi-night villa rates make the $300 easy to clear in one booking. Link your Airbnb account to your Amex account now — it is required before a Luxe booking will work, and it is not something you want to discover at checkout.
Re-run the fee math honestly. If one-night harvesting was how you justified the card, that justification is gone. Decide in December, not next July.
The Business Platinum: yes, there were developments
Three, and they cut in different directions.
It takes the same hit. The Lodging Credit terms name Business Platinum Card Members alongside consumer, so the January 1 two-night minimum applies to business cardholders identically. This matters more here, because single-overnight trips are a business travel pattern, not a leisure one. The card most exposed to the nerf is the one whose holders fly out Tuesday and home Wednesday.
It gained a workspace benefit on October 22. Amex added a complimentary ZO by Tishman Speyer membership: unlimited access to ZO Clubhouse spaces with four guest day passes per week, four day passes per month at U.S. Studio locations, and up to $500 in statement credits per card account per calendar year toward event space bookings or a Dining Club membership. No Amex enrollment is required — activate through ZO's own site or app, and reserve Studio visits in advance. Coverage is roughly 20-plus locations across six U.S. cities, concentrated in New York with sites in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Beverly Hills.
The welcome offer is running high. Elevated Business Platinum offers of as much as 300,000 Membership Rewards points after $20,000 of spend in the first three months are circulating. Treat that number with care: reporting on it is inconsistent about whether it is public or targeted, and offers vary by applicant. Check your own offer through Amex directly before planning around it.
Net read: if you hold the Business Platinum and work from any of those six cities, the ZO credit plausibly offsets more than the Lodging Credit change costs you. If you don't, October was a bad month for this card.
Before December 31
Check whether your July-to-December $300 is still unspent — it expires with the calendar, not with your membership year
If it is, book a one-night Fine Hotels + Resorts stay while single nights still qualify
Link your Airbnb account to your Amex account so Luxe bookings work in 2027
Price one December 30 to January 2 trip as a way to capture both halves
Business Platinum holders in New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Beverly Hills or Washington: activate ZO through its app and find out what the $500 credit is worth to you
Decide on renewal now, while the old rule is still live and you can still test the alternative
