Amex Expands Abroad as Two Hotel Offers Near Their Deadline
The most useful travel news does not always arrive as a new card or a record points offer. Sometimes it changes the smaller decisions that shape a trip: which card to hand over abroad, whether to pay for a hotel or use points, and whether a stay you were already planning can move you closer to elite status.
This week brings one notable shift in card acceptance and four hotel offers with very different audiences. Two of them need a booking by Wednesday.
1. Amex is closing the acceptance gap
The familiar international-travel routine is to bring an American Express card for its rewards and benefits, then bring a Visa or Mastercard for the places that will not take it. That backup is still sensible, but Amex says the first card is becoming useful in more places.

That is a meaningful change for travelers who want to use an Amex card beyond flights and big-chain hotels. It is also a global figure, not a promise that the restaurant beside your hotel or a local tour operator will take the card. The practical move: use Amex when its earning rate or protections make it the right choice, confirm acceptance for major payments, and keep a backup card in your wallet.
2. A Marriott rental could do double duty for status
A vacation rental is usually chosen for the space, location, or ability to keep a group together. For Bonvoy members close to a year-end status threshold, an eligible Marriott home rental can now serve another purpose.
Members who register and book by September 30 can earn double Elite Night Credits at participating Homes & Villas properties. The paid stay must be at least two consecutive nights, cost at least $1,750, and be completed by December 15. Book three qualifying nights and Marriott will count six toward status. The value depends entirely on where you stand. Six nights could be decisive for someone just short of a tier; they are much less compelling for someone nowhere near the next one. Before booking: check your current elite-night count, register, and compare the rental’s total price with other homes you would actually consider. The bonus should improve a good rental decision, not create an expensive trip you did not need.
3. IHG wants more than one stay this fall
IHG’s fourth-quarter promotion has an appealing headline—up to 3X points—but the first stay is the key to understanding it. A member’s first qualifying stay between October 1 and December 31 earns no promotional bonus. The extra points start on stay number two.

For someone with a string of paid IHG stays ahead, that can become a worthwhile return. For someone with one hotel stay, it is simply the wrong promotion. And because the app unlocks the higher rate, a booking made there may earn more than the same stay reserved on IHG’s website.
The sensible play: register before your first eligible stay, then compare the app price on later stays with the other rates available. Extra points have value only when the qualifying room rate holds up.
4. Thompson gives paid Hyatt stays a little more appeal
Thompson Hotels is celebrating its 25th anniversary with 2X World of Hyatt Bonus Points on eligible stays through November 10. Registration is available in the World of Hyatt app. www.hyatt.com
It is the sort of offer that works best in the background. If you were already going to pay for a Thompson room, register and take the additional points. If you are choosing between cash and an award night, the promotion is only one side of the calculation. At a high cash rate, using Hyatt points could still be the stronger booking.
Before you reserve: check both the paid and points prices for your dates. A double-points offer is welcome; it is not a reason to stop comparison-shopping.
5. IHG’s free third night is a deal worth pricing carefully
The clearest potential cash saving in this lineup comes from IHG’s “Stay 3 Nights, Pay 2” offer at participating Asia Pacific properties. Members can book a premium room or suite for three consecutive nights and pay for two, with breakfast for up to two guests included. The offer can repeat within one reservation—a qualifying six-night stay costs four nights at the promotional rate. Bookings close September 30 for stays through June 30, 2027. www.ihg.com
A complimentary night at an expensive hotel sounds straightforward, but the price of the other two nights decides whether it is a bargain. For now, the deadline board is short: Marriott Homes & Villas and IHG’s three-for-two offer must be booked by September 30. The remaining promotions reward travelers who already have the right stays on the calendar.
